Antonio María Cardinal Javierre Ortas SDB (born February 21, 1921 in Siétamo , Huesca Province , Spain , † February 1, 2007 in Rome , Italy ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Antonio María Javierre Ortas made his first profession in the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1940 . He studied Catholic theology , philosophy and education in Girona , Barcelona , Salamanca and Rome and received the sacrament of ordination in 1949 . Then his doctorate he attended the Catholic University of Leuven for a doctor of theology .

From 1951 to 1976 he worked as a professor of fundamental theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum of the Salesians in Turin , where he also held the chair of dogmatics for several years and held management tasks in the administration of the theological faculty. During this time the Atheneum was elevated to the status of the Pontifical University of the Salesians (UPS) and the headquarters were relocated to Rome. He was rector of UPS from 1971 to 1974. Antonio María Javierre Ortas gave guest lectures in Peru , Guatemala and Poland and initiated international symposia on fundamental theology in Leuven and Gazzada . During the Second Vatican Council he advised the Spanish bishops on questions of ecumenism and worked for many years as an advisor at the Secretariat for Christian Unity. He participated as a member of several meetings of the World Council of Churches .

On May 20, 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Meta and it ordered the secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education . He was ordained episcopal on June 29th of the same year by the Archbishop of Madrid , Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancón . Co- consecrators were Javier Osés Flamarique , auxiliary bishop in Huesca , and the secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Codex Iuris Canonici , Rosalio José Castillo Lara SDB.

June 28, 1988 he called Pope John Paul II. As cardinal deacon with the title Diakonie Santa Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio in the College of Cardinals and assigned him the duties of the librarian and archivist of the Holy Roman Church. In 1992 he became Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments , which he headed until the acceptance of his resignation on June 21, 1996 for reasons of age. In 1999 he was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice while retaining his title diaconia .

Cardinal Javierre Ortas died on February 1, 2007 in his apartment in Rome as a result of a heart attack . The exequies took place on February 2, 2007 in St. Peter's Basilica under the chairmanship of Pope Benedict XVI. instead of. He was then buried in the Salesian crypt in the Catacomb of Calixtus .
