Antonius Nicolescu

Antonius Nicolescu (born August 17, 1946 in Bucharest ; according to other sources in Slatina ) is a Romanian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Nicolescu completed a vocal studies at the Conservatory in Bucharest ; his teacher was the well-known Romanian tenor Mihail Știrbei . In 1971 he made his debut as Vladimir in the opera Fürst Igor at the Opera Națională Bucureşti , to which he belonged in the following years as “First Lyric Tenor”. During this time he gave international guest performances at the Athens National Opera , the Berlin State Opera and the Darmstadt State Theater . In 1973 he won second prize at the International Singing Competition in 's-Hertogenbosch .

In the 1980/81 season he took over the Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana at the Heidelberg City Theater with a “slim, stable tenor, effetto and virile design” . In the 1980/81 season he sang Alfredo in La Traviata (as a guest) at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf ; he sang “with a voice that wasn't too big, initially looks very pale, but was able to improve later, but still struggled to survive next to these big voices [ie the two partners].” In the 1980/81 season Nicolescu sang on Staatstheater Darmstadt played Faust in a new production of the Gounod opera Margarethe (premiere: March 1981); he "needed [however] until the garden picture, to sing himself and his then quite flexible - up to the luminous high C - used tenor." In the 1980/81 season he also took over the role of Des Grieux at the Staatstheater Darmstadt "dramatically intensely" in a new production of Massenet's Manon (premiere: October 1981); he won "from his voice, which was effortlessly radiant, moving lyrical nuances, but also passionate attacks". In the 1981/82 season he sang the role of Ismaele in Nabucco (premiere: December 1981) there, “sounding passably Mediterranean” . In the 1982/83 season he appeared at the Gießen Theater as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni ; he had an “excellent mezza voce” and “marked the highlights of the premiere with his expressively phrased solos.” ​​In the 1983/84 season he sang the role of the knight Hugo von Ringstetten in a new production of the opera Undine (premiere: October 1983); In this role, however, he was “unable to fully bring in his“ splendid tenor material and his technical versatility ”. From 1984 Nicolescu performed permanently in Germany and Western Europe . He had been a permanent member of the Essen Opera House since 1984 ; from there he continued his extensive guest performance. Nicolescu was a permanent member of the Essen Opera House up to and including the 1996/97 season.

His repertoire included the lyric and youthful-dramatic tenor roles, especially in the Italian and French subjects: Ernesto in Don Pasquale , Count Almaviva in Der Barbier von Sevilla , title role in Ernani , Alfredo in La Traviata (including 1994 in Essen), Herzog in Rigoletto (including in the 1985/86 season in a new production by Giancarlo del Monaco ), Alvaro in Die Macht des Schicksals , Rodolfo in La Bohème , the title roles in Faust and Hoffmann's stories , Don José in Carmen and Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles . Nicolescu also sang various Mozart roles (Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni , Tamino in Die Zauberflöte ), Lyonel in Martha , Narraboth in Salome (including the 1985/86 season in Essen) and the Russian repertoire (Lenski in Eugen Onegin ).

In the 1985/86 season he sang the role of Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Heidelberg Theater (premiere: September 1985). In February 1986 he appeared with the ensemble of the Heidelberg Theater at a La Bohème guest performance as Rodolfo in the Heilbronn Theater . In the 1986/87 season he made guest appearances at the Munster Municipal Theaters as the title hero in Don Carlos and in the title role of Hoffmann's Stories . In the 1987/88 season he sang Arrigo in The Sicilian Vespers in Münster , where he “met the public's need for top notes with tenoral charisma”. In the season 1988/89 there followed as premiere roles Gustav III./Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera (premiere: October 1988) and Don José in Carmen (premiere: February 1989); In addition, he sang Rodolfo in La Bohème in repertoire performances (including November 1988) . In the 1989/90 season he appeared at the Trier Theater as Manrico in Il trovatore , also in a new production (premiere: March 1990). In the 1989/90 season he sang Des Grieux in a new production of the opera Manon Lescaut at the Stadttheater Gießen . In the 1989/90 season he sang the Duke in a new production of Verdi's opera Rigoletto at the Heidelberg City Theater . In the 1990/91 season he appeared at the Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken in the title role of the opera Hoffmanns Erzählungen (director: Werner Saladin ), in which he “mastered all demands with his well-fitting height”. In the 1990/91 season he took on the role of Ismaele in Nabucco (premiere: September 1990) and the role of Cavaradossi in Tosca (premiere: April 1991) at the Stadttheater Trier . He sang Cavaradossi "with the greatest ease and impressive security" also in the resumption in the 1992/93 season (WA: March 1993). In the 1994/95 season he took over the Duke in a new Rigoletto production at the Trier City Theater .

He also performed at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp (1987, as Rodolfo), at the Opéra Bastille (1992, as Hoffmann in German in an otherwise French-language production, briefly as a substitute for the indisposed Neil Shicoff ), with the Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele (1993, as Turiddu), at the Stadttheater Bern (1992/93 season as Don José in a new production; 1995 as Gösta Berling in I cavalieri di Ekebù by Riccardo Zandonai ; 1995 as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly ; 1998 as Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur ), at the Hanover State Theater (as Lyonel in Martha ), at the Hamburg State Opera (1996, as Don José) and at the Schwerin State Theater (1997, as Manrico in Il trovatore ). In 1996 he sang Don José at the Gera Opera House . From 1997 to 2000 he had a permanent guest contract at the stages of the city of Gera and at the Landestheater Altenburg .

In addition to his operatic activities, Nicolescu also performed extensively as a concert singer. In 1986 he performed in the Davos Congress Center in a memorial concert for the Italian opera tenor Mario del Monaco, who had recently died . In 1989 he sang the Verdi Requiem with the Messiaskantorei Hannover in a guest performance in Stadthagen .

Nicolescu also made several television appearances. In 1973 he worked on Romanian television in a production of the opera La vida breve . In 1980 he was a guest at Heinz Schenk's program Zum Blauen Bock . Nicolescu also appeared on January 29, 1983 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein together with Grit van Jüten as a guest on the ARD Saturday evening show One will win . On April 20, 1985, he performed again in One will win in Salzburg .

Antonius Nicolescu lives with his wife Barbara Egel-Nicolescu in Müllheim (Baden) . He is the father of two daughters.
