history
The first white settlers in the area were the Phelps family, who settled on the banks of the Pomme de Terre River. Other settlers joined them, including the Lanthop brothers, who built a water-powered flour mill in 1972. The resulting WJ Jennison Flour Mill | WJ Jennison Flour Mill was in operation until the 1960s.
When the population increased due to the influx of further settlers from the east of the USA, Germany and Scandinavia, it was decided to set up a township called Phelps . Due to an intervention by Phelps, the name was changed to Appleton , the name of Phelps' hometown. On September 4, 1872, the township was officially established. In 1880 the place was incorporated and detached from the township as the Village of Appleton .
As the city continued to grow, schools and churches were built. After a school with a classroom was sufficient at the beginning, a larger school building was built in 1880. In 1904 a larger brick building was built for the older generation. In 1916 the old school building from 1880 was demolished and a new high school built, which was expanded in 1952. The school stayed in operation until 1992 when it was merged with two other schools to form Lac qui Parle Valley High School .
The Prairie Correctional Facility , a private Corrections Corporation of America- operated detention facility with a capacity of 1,600 inmates, opened in 1996. In 2010, the inmates were reassigned to other prisons and Appleton Prison closed after more than 13 years. As a result, the city's population decreased significantly.
