history

The farm was founded by Samuel Appleton in 1636 and is still named after him today. Appleton initially grew vegetables, wheat and hay there, with the farm's product range being expanded by his descendants to include wood, meat and dairy products at the end of the 19th century. At that time, the area already had a high recreational value and was used in particular for fox hunting and hunting races . In 1998, Joan Appleton signed the present sanctuary to the Trustees of Reservations after having owned it for nine generations.

Protected area

The site, with its historic buildings and stone walls, offers a vague glimpse into New England's agricultural past . Milk and dairy products, meat, eggs and hay are still produced on the farm and sold in the area. Visitors can also grow and harvest their vegetables themselves as part of a community program.

New England's largest populations of rice blackbird and larkbird live in the reserve . The wetlands are seasonally used by migratory birds , while frogs and salamanders (including rare species such as the blue- spotted cross-toothed newt and the yellow-spotted salamander) live there permanently . The fields also offer red deer , foxes , coyotes and mink sufficient habitat, while the fishing marten is widespread in the forests of the complex. Hawks can be seen in autumn and owls in winter . The sanctuary is also home to the IUCN Red List of the Endangered Bat species Myotis sodalis .

There are more than 6  mi (9.7  km ) of hiking and riding trails available to visitors, some of which are part of the Bay Circuit Trail . There is also a visitor center and direct sales of farm produce. Members of the trustees have free entry; non-members are charged an entry fee. A separate permit must be obtained in advance for riding on the site and for carriage rides.

Appleton Farms Grass Rides

The Appleton Farms Grass Rides encompass a total of 259 acres (1.05 km²) and are part of the Appleton Farms Conservation Area . The site offers more than 5 mi (8 km) of former riding and carriage paths as it was originally designed for horse riding excursions. Today, however, out of consideration for the wetlands, riding is prohibited in this area. The road network is structured so that there are five "spokes" meet in the middle of a clearing, where a large, out of the ruins of the former library of Harvard College salvaged pinnacle of granite marks the center.
