Areguá ( Guaraní Aregua ) is a city and a district in Paraguay . The city has 16,600 inhabitants, the entire district 74,000 (as of 2018). Areguá is the capital of the Central Department . It was founded in 1538 by Domingo Martínez de Irala and is one of the oldest city foundations in Paraguay.
The city is located near Lake Ypacaraí , which is about 30 km from Asunción . It spreads on a gently rising mountain from which you can see the entire area up to Lake Ypacarai. Areguá is also in the immediate vicinity of the town of Ypacaraí , which bears the same name as the lake.
The city is known for its many craft workshops in the pottery sector, which sell their goods in a long shopping street. It also has a well-known church and idyllic streets in the center.
The historic city center of Areguá was declared Paraguay's national cultural heritage in 1997.
Areguá is connected to Asunción via Luque by a busy country road.
