When James J. Hill founded what would later become the Great Northern Railway in 1879 , a railway line from Crookston to the Canadian border was planned. The land on which the present city is located was previously inhabited by a settler from Canada named Gervais , who established a small settlement here. Hill had a railroad settlement built south of the Middle River , which was named Argyle and incorporated as an independent municipality in 1883.

Since the new settlement was only on the south side of the river, the embankment was problem-free. But this also meant that the northern bank became a large polder area. Thus the former settlement of Gervais was abandoned in 1888 with the construction of the dike, which was achieved through compensation payments from the government.

The first predominantly French-Canadian settlers were gradually joined by numerous immigrants from England, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Scotland and Germany.
