Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck
The Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck was opened on September 28, 2007 in the Remagen district of Rolandseck . The museum is made up of the classicist station building and the new building designed by the American architect Richard Meier , which is "harmoniously" integrated into nature . It has a total of four exhibition levels, which are used with changing presentations. The program of the Drei-Sparten-Haus includes exhibitions with international fine arts, classical concerts and a summer chamber music festival with well-known ensembles and soloists, artist talks and readings by prominent authors. The focus is on the art of Hans Arp and vonSophie Taeuber-Arp . In special exhibitions, sculptures and paintings by contemporary artists are shown in dialogue with these works. In addition, the museum presents paintings from the Middle Ages to the modern age from the Rau Collection for UNICEF . The director of the museum is Oliver Kornhoff .
history
Since 1964, the Rolandseck station has been a center of cultural life under the direction of Johannes Wasmuth . Concerts and exhibitions took place there and artists lived and worked in the building of the station. After the death of Johannes Wasmuth, cultural life in the station ended for the first time. On October 22, 2004 the station was reopened as the Arp-Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck , on September 28, 2007 the new building by Richard Meier followed on the slope above the station. According to the original concept, the Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp e. V. and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate operate the museum together. The foundation initially made its collection of works by Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp available for exhibitions. After massive disputes about the foundation's compliance with the contract, which the founding director Klaus Gallwitz described as a "declared war", the partners declared their cooperation to be over in July 2008; the foundation withdrew the works belonging to it from the museum. The state then declared that it wanted to equip the building with around 400 works by Arp in state ownership and loans from other collectors and museums. In 2010 the museum was the most visited art museum in Rhineland-Palatinate with 61,000 visitors.
opening
The topping-out ceremony for the new building by the American architect Richard Meier above the train station took place on October 18, 2005, just under a year after the foundation stone was laid on October 23, 2004. The new building was inaugurated on September 29, 2007 with the opening of the museum in the presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel .
For the entire construction project, 33 million euros were budgeted, of which 14.3 million euros were made available from compensatory funds under the Berlin / Bonn Act ( agreement on compensatory measures for the Bonn region ), the other half comes from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , which is also the client.
The exhibition space in the new building is 2900 square meters. The costs for the new building amounted to € 25.4 million. The federal government contributed € 17.6 million and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate € 7.8 million. The remaining amount of € 7.4 million was used to renovate the station.
The new building and the historic station building are connected by a tunnel and an elevator. This tunnel is a replica of a railway tunnel (but not part of the real former track). It is illuminated by a 17 m long neon light spiral by Barbara Trautmann (Kaa , named after the snake in the jungle book , installation from 2007).

Exhibitions
In addition to works by Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, the opening exhibition included works by Anselm Kiefer , Johannes Brus , Yvonne Fehling , Jennie Peiz , Anton Henning and Barbara Trautmann. The exhibition was criticized in feuilletons: too little space was given to the work of Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, the choice of other artists was arbitrary and the foundation Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp e. V. issued works that were created after the artist's death as original works.
Exhibitions by Anselm Kiefer , Kurt Kocherscheidt and Elfie Semotan , Jonathan Meese , Steiner / Lenzlinger , KO Götz , Tara Donovan , Barbara Hepworth (2016), Henry Moore (2017/18), Otto Piene (2019/20) and others followed In the rooms of the former train station, temporary exhibitions on individual contemporary artists or on different topics take place.
Collections
Rau collection
On October 29, 2008, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and UNICEF signed an agreement according to which the " Rau Art Collection " currently has around 230 works by artists such as Lucas Cranach , Claude Monet , Paul Cézanne , Max Liebermann and August Macke with an estimated value of several one hundred million euros will be exhibited in the Arp Museum in the future. The collection was compiled by the doctor Gustav Rau , who died in 2002, and bequeathed to UNICEF in his will. 95 works that Rau himself sees as the core of the collection must remain together until 2026, the other 135 works are to be gradually sold in favor of the UNICEF foundation's assets.
From 2009 to 2012, works from the "Kunstkammer Rau" have been shown in six partial exhibitions in the Arp Museum under the following aspects:

Collection of Meerwein
In 2015, the Mainz art collector, architect, interior designer and retired college professor Gerhard Meerwein donated his collection of over 350 collages, which he had compiled over the past 40 years, to the Arp Museum. Works by Jiří Kolář , Walter Dexel , Wolf Vostell , Raymond Hains , Joseph Beuys , Max Ernst and El Lissitzky are represented in the Meerwein Collection.
Remagen Sculpture Bank
Since 2000, the Arp Museum has been developing the Remagen Sculpture Bank in collaboration with the City of Remagen . So far it consists of thirteen sculptures by the artists Hans Arp , Lajos Barta , Bittermann & Duka , Eberhard Bosslet , Johannes Brus , Hamish Fulton , Thomas Huber , Peter Hutchinson , Res Ingold , Otmar Sattel , Erwin Wortelkamp and Aron Demetz .
Museum café and bistro
The museum café and bistro is located in the restored former ballroom of the train station (mid-19th century) with stucco ceilings, large crystal chandeliers and an outdoor terrace with a view of the Rhine and the Siebengebirge with the Drachenfels . It was the reception hall for the celebrities who once moved from the train to the Rhine ship and the venue for concerts and theater performances.
The bistro was designed by Anton Henning , who also painted the windows in the passage to the kitchen wing in 2012.
