Albert Arthur Georg Handtmann (born February 27, 1927 in Biberach ; † April 14, 2018 there ) was a German engineer , inventor and founder of the Handtmann group of companies .

Life

Arthur Handtmann was born as the youngest child of Kathleen (née Wallace) and Karl Handtmann ( businessman ) on February 27, 1927 in Biberach. From 1937 he went to high school in Biberach . In June 1943, at the age of 16, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . In 1945 he returned to Biberach after being a prisoner of war and in 1947 took over the management of his father's company, a heavy metal foundry and fittings factory with 20 employees. In 1948 he began studying mechanical engineering . He had to interrupt this for two months in 1948 due to the currency reform . In 1950 he successfully completed his studies and became sole managing director . As early as 1950 he began to convert the company from a heavy metal foundry to an aluminum light metal foundry . In 1951 his mother Kathleen died.

In 1952 he married Ilse Anne Marie Müller. In 1953 his father Karl Handtmann died and his son Thomas was born. Also in 1953 he started manufacturing butcher machines with the engineer Hans Müller and three other employees . In 1956 his daughter Ursula was born. In 1958, he switched from brass to stainless steel in the valve construction division. In 1959 his daughter Elisabeth was born.

In 1968 he founded the Elteka plastics foundry . The machine factory and the fittings factory in Biberach were relocated from Freiburger Strasse to Birkenallee (since 2002 Arthur-Handtmann-Strasse). He began moving his foundry from Fabrikstrasse to Birkenallee in 1973. The foundry administration was then moved to Birkenallee in 1977. In 1978 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for special merits in the economic and social field . In 1980 he expanded the die casting division and in 1982 brought his son Thomas Handtmann (fourth generation ) into the group of companies. At the Birkenallee location he built up the new sand foundry area from 1983 . In 1989 A-Punkt Automation was founded. In 1992 he took over a foundry in Annaberg-Buchholz in eastern Germany .

In 1993 he expanded the areas of machine factory and A-point automation with new buildings. In 1993, he also set up a new head office for the foundry in Birkenallee. In 1996, he expanded the Elteka division by building a new administration and production building. In 1998 Arthur Handtmann handed over operational management to his son Thomas Handtmann on the occasion of the company's 125th anniversary. Arthur Handtmann has headed the Advisory Board of the Handtmann Group of Companies since 1998 . In 2000 he relocated the machine factory to Biberach's new industrial area in Aspach. This enabled more space for companies to expand in Birkenallee. In 2002 the city of Biberach renamed Birkenallee to Arthur-Handtmann-Straße in his honor. Arthur Handtmann was an honorary citizen of the city of Biberach since 2007 .

In 2015 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class, for outstanding services in the business sector and for the general good .

  • The Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for special merits in the economic and social field (awarded on October 13, 1978 at the suggestion of the then Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg).
  • The citizenship certificate of the city of Biberach for special services to the economy (awarded in October 1987).
  • The citizen medal of the city of Biberach an der Riss (awarded in September 1998).
  • The honorary citizenship of the city of Biberach (awarded in February 2007).
  • The gold medal of honor of the IHK Ulm as the first entrepreneur (awarded in October 2007).
  • The Baden-Württemberg Founders Prize for special entrepreneurial achievements by the Sparkassenverband (awarded in 2008).
  • Renaming of the former Birkenallee in Biberach an der Riss to Arthur Handtmann Strasse (August 2002).
  • Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany - 1st class (awarded on March 20, 2015)
  • Honorary citizenship of the city of Annaberg-Buchholz (awarded on June 3, 2017)
