Articulation type
The articulation type (also called articulation mode) describes in phonetics the mode of overcoming in the vocal tract (attachment tube) through which a speech sound is formed.
A distinction is made between the following types of articulation:
- Plosives
- Nasals
- Vibrants
- Taps / flaps
- Fricatives
- Affricates
- Approximants
- Lateral
- Clicks
- Implosive
- Ejectives
The mentioned types of articulation are not complementary, that is, there are sounds that are, for example, both approximants and laterals, or laterals that are fricatives at the same time.
The types of articulation are actually geometric changes in the human vocal tract caused by the organs of articulation .
