The Aschwarden flood ditch is 8.5 km, with its longest source brook 17 km, long right-hand Weser tributary in Lower Saxony , the upper course of which forms the border between the municipality of Schwanewede in the district of Osterholz and the municipality of Uthlede in the district of Cuxhaven and that in the municipality of Sandstedt in the right branch of the Weser flows.

The Aschwardener Flutgraben arises at about half a meter above sea level on the eastern edge of Osterstade from the Kuhfleth coming from Lehnstedt and the Meyenburger Mühlengraben ( 53 ° 17 ′ 20 ″  N , 8 ° 35 ′ 45 ″  E ) . This in turn drains the valleys of the Osterholzer Geest east of Meyenburg . Its largest tributary, the Garlstedt drainage ditch, is fed, among other things, by the source stream of the Heidhofer Teiche , which rises south of the Sprengberg at 30 m above sea level ( 53 ° 14 ′ 53 ″  N , 8 ° 39 ′ 36 ″  E , source) .

In Osterstade, the Aschwarden flood ditch flows in an S-shaped course westwards. At the little village of Bruch, part of Aschwarden , there is a cross connection to the Hinnebecker Fleth , which is left through the winter dike at Rade and flows into the main river of the Weser at the southern edge of the Fährplate .

The Aschwarden flood ditch itself is left on the border of Aschwarden and Wurtfleth with a pumping station through the winter dike. Immediately after the pumping station, it bends north and runs almost two kilometers in the bed of a former arm of the Weser. At Rechtebe it bends west again and after 700 m through its sluice in the summer dike reaches the right arm of the Weser ( 53 ° 18 ′ 33 ″  N , 8 ° 30 ′ 50 ″  E , estuary) . Between the winter and summer dykes, the ditch and the Hasseler Balje form the eastern boundary of the old Weser island Hammelwarder Sand .

The Aschwarden flood ditch is located in the FFH area “Teichfledermausgewässer in the Bremerhaven / Bremen area”, which is also designated here as a nature reserveTeichfledermausgewässer ”.
