The Church of the Resurrection is a church of the Evangelical Parish Völklingen-Warndt in Wehrden in the Saarland , a district of Völklingen . The parish is assigned to the Saar-West parish of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

Before today's Church of the Resurrection was built, the Protestant Christians von Wehrden used a disused colliery hall on the Saar tunnel as a place of worship .

In the years 1953 to 1954, the current church was finally built. The construction site was on the site of the old cemetery on Ludweilerstrasse. The laying of the foundation stone for the construction of the church, for the plans of which architect Willy Lather ( Altenkessel ) was responsible, took place on May 3, 1953. Construction company Alfred Müller (Völklingen) was responsible for carrying out the construction work. On February 4, 1954, the church was consecrated.

In 1964 the church was expanded to include a free-standing bell tower . From 1966 to 1968, the rooms under the church were converted into community rooms according to plans by architect Weber (Völklingen). The first restoration work was carried out in 1973. Others followed in 1975, 1976 and 1979.

In 1974 the church with the Church of the Resurrection was given its current name.

Due to the decreasing number of members of the Protestant community and high heating costs, which are due to the size and construction of the building, the closure of the church was up for debate at the beginning of 2010. In order to prevent this, a support association was founded , which campaigns for the church foyer to be turned into a columbarium, i.e. a place where funeral urns can be kept for a fee . In this way, the maintenance of the building is to be ensured.

Architecture and equipment

The church building was erected as a reinforced concrete structure clad with sandstone . The interior of the church, which offers space for around 400 people, is brightly lit by high, vertical ribbon windows .

The Hungarian-German architect and church window painter György Lehoczky ( Saarbrücken ) designed the large round window in the choir in 1954 , which shows the risen Christ flanked by John the Baptist and the Archangel Michael .

The antependums for the altar and pulpit were made in 1966 by textile artist Dorothea Zech ( Heusweiler ). Also from 1966, created by Klaus Tettenborn, are six cubic candlesticks , as well as the altar cross in Latin form made of aluminum , which is covered with red glass mosaic. The main portal with door leaves driven from copper is the work of the coppersmith Alfons Weber and was created in 1975. Edith Scheller-Fromm ( Namborn ) designed the large window in the entrance area.

Further items of equipment are a group of sacrament devices , consisting u. a. from a ciborium , a goblet-shaped lidded vessel, a paten , silver and a wine jug with lid. All devices are foundations from the years 1955 and 1956. Ceramics master Brigitte Hoenisch made a second group of communion devices in 1978, which are made of clay and coated with an elaborate mineral glaze. There is a jug , a paten and four goblets.
