August von Röntgen (born June 10, 1781 in Neuwied ; † August 5, 1865 Fahr (since 1970 district of Neuwied)) was a German lawyer and diplomat.

Life

Gottfried Leonhard August von Röntgen, second son of the Neuwied cabinetmaker David Roentgen , studied law at the University of Leipzig and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen . In Erlangen he joined the Corps Onoldia in 1799 . With a doctoral thesis with Christian Gotthelf Hübner , he was awarded Dr. iur. PhD. He then entered the service of the Principality of Wied as police chief . After its mediatization in 1806 he became an official in the Duchy of Nassau and embarked on a diplomatic career. In 1809 he became a charge d'affaires at the grand ducal Bergischen court , in 1810 diplomatic agent in Paris . In 1814 he was one of the companions of Ernst Franz Ludwig Marschall von Bieberstein at the Congress of Vienna . In 1815 he followed the Allied Army to Paris on behalf of the Nassau Duke. As a confidante and advisor to the Duke, he became Minister- Resident of Nassau in The Hague in 1816 , later Minister of Nassau and Baden in Munich and, in 1833, Minister of Nassau and Brunswick in the Bundestag. In 1844 he took his leave, but still acted in 1857 when Sophia von Nassau married Oskar II von Schweder as envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Sweden and Norway. He died in his villa on Friedrichstein near Neuwied.

Honors

  • In 1824 von Röntgen was ennobled by the King of Prussia.
  • He was the bearer of many orders, including the Grand Cross of the Baden Order of the Zähringer Lion .
