Life

Auguste Veillon was born the son of a notary in Bex, in the Rhone Valley . After completing a degree in Reformed theology at the University of Lausanne , he entered the studio of François Diday in Geneva, where he painted seascapes with mountains and views of the Bernese Oberland . From 1858–1859 he studied in Paris , where he met the orientalist Eugène Fromentin , who had a strong influence on his painting. Also predominantly autodidactic studies took Veillon to London in 1862 and to Rome from 1862–1863 . In 1863 he married Laure Émilie Karcher-Dunant, whom he had met in Rome and with whom he lived in Geneva. From 1861 he made regular contributions to the regular exhibitions of the Swiss Art Association . In 1870 the Salon de Paris showed a selection of his works.

Veillon reached Egypt for the first time in 1873 via Venice and Naples . In Cairo he met the Geneva painter Étienne Duval . Here he turned more and more to oriental themes and mostly painted landscapes with the Nile or the Dead Sea . However, in the years 1880, 1881, 1882 and 1883 he spent the summer months in the Netherlands . From 1884 he was drawn to the Mediterranean again: in 1884 he traveled to Tunisia , in 1885 another trip to Egypt followed, in 1886 he visited Jerusalem , in 1887 Damascus and in 1888 he stayed in Constantinople and Athens .

In 1873 Veillon received an award at the World Exhibition in Vienna . His paintings were shown at the Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich in 1883 and at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889 . After his death, major retrospectives followed in Geneva, Lausanne, Basel , Winterthur , Zurich and Bern .
