Augustine Eugene Hornyak

Augustine Eugene Hornyak OSBM , also Augustinus Eugene Hornyak , Ukrainian : Августин Горняк , (born October 7, 1919 in Kucura , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † November 16, 2003 in London ) was a bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the first Apostolic Exarch of Great Britain .

Life

Eugene Hornyak was the third of five children. He completed his primary education in his native Kucura. From an early age Eugene felt drawn to the priesthood , so his parents sent him to the diocese of Križevci . Here Bishop Dionisije Njaradi took over his care and training as a priest. In 1940 Hornyak was sent to Rome and studied at the Pontifical Ukrainian College . On March 25, 1945 he was ordained a priest in Rome by Auxiliary Bishop Ivan Bucko ( Archeparchy of Philadelphia ) . Hornyak continued his studies in Rome and completed it with a graduate exam in theology and canon law .

Canada and USA

At the beginning of the Second World War he went to Pittsburgh at the invitation of Bishop Daniel Ivancho and taught canon law and dogmatics at the seminary of the Ruthenian Archeparchy of Pittsburgh . He also held the office of choirmaster and spiritual director .

In 1956, Eugene Hornyak entered Mundare ( Alberta , Canada to be) novitiate in the Congregation of the Basilian of Sts. Josaphat and chose Augustine as the religious name . In 1957 he returned to the USA and took his perpetual religious vows on June 19, 1960 . He was then appointed spiritual director of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic seminary in the Stamford eparchy . This was followed by the assignment of the novice master at Glen Cove .

Great Britain

With the call to auxiliary bishop in the Apostolic Exarchate England and Wales , Father Augustine was named titular bishop of Hermonthis on August 14, 1961 . On October 26, 1961, the Archbishop of Philadelphia Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn OSBM donated him episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Bishop Isidore Borecky , Apostolic Exarch of Eastern Canada and Joseph Michael Schmondiuk , Bishop of the Stamford Eparchy . Pope John XXIII appointed him on May 12, 1968 Apostolic Exarch of England and Wales (later Apostolic Exarchate of Great Britain).

During his tenure, he attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . He was co -consecrator of Joakim Segedi as titular bishop of the titular bishopric of Gypsaria , Michael Joseph Dudick as bishop of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church of Passaic and Miroslav Stefan Marusyn as titular bishop of Cadi . Since his resignation on September 29, 1987, he was retired Apostolic Exarch of Great Britain, succeeded by Michel Hrynchyshyn . Bishop Hornyak died on November 16, 2003 in London and was buried in his native Kucura (now Serbia ).
