The BBC Polonia is a cargo ship whose crew was hijacked off the Nigerian coast in 2010.
history
The ship was built in 2010 as the third unit in a series at the Polish shipyard Northern Shipyard (Stocznia Północna) in Gdańsk , which belongs to the Remantova Group . The owner is the Briese Schiffahrtsgesellschaft from Leer , which also manages the ship sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda . It was chartered by BBC Chartering & Logistic, also based in Leer .
Pirate attack off Nigeria
On July 2, 2010 at 8:00 p.m., pirates attacked the heavy lift ship on its way from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria to Onne in the Niger Delta and kidnapped the twelve crew members, including two Germans. The other hostages came from Russia , Lithuania , Latvia and Ukraine . A Ukrainian seaman was shot. He was treated in a hospital in Bonny about 20 km southeast of the oil metropolis Port Harcourt . The Nigerian Navy seized the abandoned ship and took it to Bonny Harbor. A spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office said on July 3, 2010 in Berlin that the German representations in Nigeria were in contact with the local authorities. The attackers and abductees are being searched for. The kidnapped sailors were released on July 4th. The Nigerian Navy announced that the crew had been released by the kidnappers. It is not known whether the ransom was paid.

The BBC Polonia is a reinforced ship with an intermediate deck for the transport of heavy cargo . The ship is equipped with two NMF - cranes equipped with a capacity of 120 tons. Both cranes can be combined and together lift up to 240 tons.
The ship has two holds and hatches. The rear cargo space can be further divided by two adjustable bulkheads . The container capacity of the ship is a total of 332 20-foot containers (180 on deck and 152 in space) or 143 40-foot containers (75 on deck and 68 in space) and 42 20-foot containers (30 on Deck and 12 in the room). With a homogeneous load with 14-ton containers, 330 fit on board. There are connections for 32 refrigerated containers on deck .
The ship is ice-reinforced ( ice class E3) for sailing in ice-covered waters .
