Backbeat is a British - German film by director Iain Softley from 1994 that describes the early years of the English music group The Beatles . The focus of the depiction is the relationship between John Lennon , the then bassist Stuart Sutcliffe and Astrid Kirchherr .

1960: The Beatles - back then with John Lennon (guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (guitar, vocals), George Harrison (guitar), Pete Best (drums) and Lennon's best friend, the art student Stuart Sutcliffe (electric bass ) travel to Hamburg to take part in the music club " Kaiserkeller ".
Times are tough, food and lodging are miserable, and pay is low. While the band gave their best at the beginning in front of a rather disinterested audience consisting mainly of sailors and drinkers, they gradually conquered the hearts of an intellectual, young audience. Among them is the photographer Astrid Kirchherr . Sutcliffe and Kirchherr fall in love. Sutcliffe, who is less talented as a bass player and more interested in painting, neglects the band and comes too late to perform.
Paul McCartney has to take over his job on bass more and more often. This was also the case with the first recording as a backing band for the singer Tony Sheridan . The friendship between John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe threatens to break. Sutcliffe decides to devote himself entirely to painting and leaves the group. The film ends with Sutcliffe's death in 1962 from a cerebral hemorrhage and the Beatles' reunion with Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg.

For the soundtrack produced by Don Was , rock 'n' roll standards were re-recorded that the Beatles had in their repertoire in their early days in Hamburg, from Indra to Star Club . The arrangements of the recordings are based on the sound of the Beatles at the time. They were recorded by an all-star band made up of well-known rock musicians such as Dave Grohl ( Nirvana , Foo Fighters ), Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs), Dave Pirner ( Soul Asylum ), Thurston Moore ( Sonic Youth ), Don Fleming ( Gumball ) and Mike Mills ( REM ).
