Bremerhaven-Lehe passenger station or usually the Leher station or Lehe station is a through station on the 187.8 kilometer of the Wunstorf – Bremerhaven seaport railway line . The train station is located on Bürgermeister-Kirschbaum-Platz in the Lehe district of the city of Bremerhaven . The station, which opened in 1914, is a listed building.

history

Bremerhaven, Geestemünde and Lehe had grown together to form an urban structure at the end of the 19th century. It was not until 1924 and 1939 that it became the city of Wesermünde , today the seaside city of Bremerhaven. The Bremen – Geestemünde railway line , also known as the “Geestebahn”, had existed since 1862 . In 1896 the Lehe-Cuxhaven and Bederkesa routes were also built . Lehe now had its first very modest train station, which was roughly at the end of Apenrader Strasse.

Freight and then also passenger traffic on the same tracks in the middle of the city turned out to be an obstacle to economic and urban development. Therefore, the rail networks of the three Unterweser communities were reorganized together. By 1914, a new route was created from Cuxhaven via Speckenbüttel and Lehe to Geestemünde with the new passenger stations Geestemünde (today Bremerhaven main station ) on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and the smaller Lehe train station.

In order to connect the Lehe State Railway Station, which was then remote from the city, line 3 of the Bremerhaven tram was first taken to the station.

building

The station building was designed by the architect Ernst Moeller from the Royal Railway Directorate Hanover from 1912 to July 1, 1914. The design of the Lehe station is clearly related to the larger main station in Geestemünde, which was built at the same time. The Lehe station has a similar structure of the functional areas as the main station built by the Prussian railway administration in Hanover.

In the center of the symmetrical building complex is the reception building with the entrance hall, which opens onto the station forecourt with two straight, closed groups of windows. The lower buildings on both sides once contained the baggage handling and waiting areas. The waiting halls for the 1st and 2nd as well as for the 3rd and 4th class were separated from each other in the north wing . The station administration was housed in the southern wing; an express goods shed followed. A tunnel connects the high platforms with the station building.

The mansard roof over the central wing is adorned with a turret for the clock on the roof ridge . Cross-storey wall templates structure the facade. There are hipped roofs over the almost equally dimensioned wing structures . The building from the turn of the century in the reform style of the time has few decorative elements. The structural elements and three sandstone reliefs on the pillars of the central pavilion by the sculptor Hermann Mesecke are used as architectural decorations. It shows allegories of rail traffic and fishing.

In 1983 the station building was sold. The entrance area was defaced by the installation of a discounter . After the market moved out, it was not dismantled . The entrance to the air raid shelter has been preserved on the forecourt .

The Lehe station building was listed as a historical monument in 2010 .

Investments

The tracks in the station area are in high position. Tracks 1 and 2 in the west are purely through tracks. Between the eastern tracks 3 and 4 there is a central platform that is partially covered. Access is via an underpass from the west, where the station building is also located. To the north of the station there are numerous sidings and the remains of the former depot. There were several sidings in the south, they are dismantled today.

traffic

A regional express line to Bremen stops at the train station , from where it runs alternately to Hanover and Osnabrück . The traffic to Bremen is increased by the regional S-Bahn to Twistringen . The routes to Cuxhaven and Buxtehude via Bremervörde are operated by evb .
