The Jacksonville Station is a railway station in long-distance traffic and is used by Amtrak operated. It is located in Jacksonville , Duval County , Florida .

history

The city's existing long-distance train station opened in 1972. In the late 2000s, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) discussed the possibility of relocating the station back to the more centrally located LaVilla neighborhood. The station at this point, which existed until the early 1970s, was converted into the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center . The idea is to build a completely new, contemporary traffic junction between road and rail in the vicinity of this congress center.

The city received its first rail link when the Florida Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad (GA&GC) was completed in May 1860 , connecting the Gulf with the Atlantic coast of Florida. The route suffered considerable damage during the American Civil War. It changed hands several times until it finally came into possession of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in the early 20th century . With the establishment of Amtrak in 1971, the station finally came to this railway company.

From December 1988 to October 1994, the station was the terminus of the Palmetto coming from New York City . By February 1995, the line was briefly extended to Tampa , before the service was temporarily stopped due to budget cuts. Under the name Silver Palm , it was reintroduced to the Tampa route in November 1996 and renamed Palmetto in May 2002 . Ultimately, the line was shortened to the New York City - Savannah ( Georgia ) route in November 2004 , which means that Jacksonville has not been served since then.

The route of the Amtrak- operated Sunset Limited long-distance passenger train , which was introduced in 1971 and initially ran from Los Angeles to New Orleans , was extended to Jacksonville (later to Miami and Orlando ) in 1993 . However, after the effects of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, the line was shortened back to the original Los Angeles - New Orleans route.

Connection

The station is located around five kilometers northwest of the city center and close to the route of US Highways 1 and 23 . It is through the remote buses from Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach to the station Lakeland about Waldo , Gainesville , Ocala , The Villages , Wildwood and Dade City connected. The service replaces the former Palmetto connection to Tampa on this section with today's additional stops at Gainesville, The Villages and Lakeland.

rail

In addition to the Silver Meteor , Amtrak's Silver Star also stops in Jacksonville today .
