S84 / 98 III side gun for the 98k carbine

The S84 / 98 bayonet was a bayonet used by the German armies of both world wars.

history

The S84 / 98 bayonet of the Gewehr 98 was developed from the side rifle 71/84, which had already been issued to the troops in 1886. In the meantime, the side rifle 71/84 had disappeared again with the introduction of the Gewehr 88 and the side rifle M 1871 was reintroduced because the total length of the rifle / bayonet was estimated to be too short. The first version of the S84 / 98 bayonet was converted from the 71/84 side gun with the introduction of the Gewehr 98 by removing the barrel ring of the 71/84 side gun and installing the SG 98 knob. The scabbard was made of leather with steel fittings. The S84 / 98 bayonet was used by the Reichswehr (version 2 with fire protection plate) during the First World War and also afterwards . This and the Wehrmacht version 3 had a steel scabbard. The S84 / 98 bayonet was used until the end of the war, although a successor had been developed with the Model 42 side gun .

Technical specifications

Single-edged, straight blade with angular, flat fullers on both sides, double-edged blade with a central point. The blade length was 250 to 255 mm, the total length varied from approx. 380 to 388 mm. The handles were made of wood in version 1 and 2. The Wehrmacht version 3 usually had Bakelite bowls.
