Lists on the subject

The Vis (officially Pistolet Vis wz. 35 , also known as the Radom pistol ) was a self-loading pistol of Polish origin in the 9 mm Parabellum caliber . Before the Second World War it served as the standard orderly weapon of the armed forces of Poland .

history

After the First World War, the Polish troops were only equipped with outdated handguns, such as the Nagant M1895 revolver . Around 1930 the procurement of modern pistols from abroad was considered, with the Czech ČZ 24 and the Belgian FN Browning model 1910 being examined. Ultimately, the decision was made to introduce a weapon from our own production.

technology

Sectional view

Piotr Wilniewczyc was commissioned with the development . He was already involved in testing the models mentioned. Jan Skrzypiński joined them later, and the pistol was named WIS after the initials of its designers Wi and S. This ultimately became Vis , alluding to the Latin word for power or strength. The team based its designs on the proven technology of Browning's weapons. The external appearance is reminiscent of the Colt M1911 , but the locking technology is more similar to the FN Browning HP . Instead of the 1911 chain link, the Vis had a rigid locking curve. The pistol proved to be very precise and had three safety systems:

  • a release lever
  • a safety device to lock the cock and trigger
  • a palm lock

The Vis did not have a clamping trigger , it worked according to the single action principle.

production

1935 to 1938

In 1935, the production of the Vis began at the state arms factory Fabryka Broni "Łucznik" Radom . The complete equipment of all armed forces in Poland could not be completed until the outbreak of the Second World War; less than 50,000 pistols were delivered in total.

1939 to 1945

After the fall of Poland and its occupation by the Wehrmacht , the stocks were confiscated and it was decided to add the weapon to the arsenal of the German troops. Production in Poland was initially continued in Radom, but then referred to the Steyr Daimler Puch company and taken up in Austria, then " Ostmark ".

The official German name of the model was Pistole 35 (p) , it was mainly issued to the Luftwaffe and units of the SS. In the course of the years the production was simplified more and more, whereby the quality of the weapons continued to decline. Shortly before the war one "was still on the basis of Vis Volkssturm gun". The total number of weapons of the type and its variants produced under German direction exceeded 300,000.

After the war, the Russian Tokarew TT-33 with the smaller caliber 7.62 mm was introduced to the Polish army and the Vis was discontinued. The originals from the Polish prewar production are popular collector's weapons due to their small number of copies and their high quality.

New editions from 1997

Due to the demand, in 1997 the Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów arms factory bought 25 copies of the Vis wz. 35 reproduced. For the 90th anniversary of the “Fabryka Broni" Łucznik "Radom” arms factory, another 50 pieces were produced there in 2015, which were primarily given to Polish dignitaries. Twenty pistols with the serial numbers 00031 to 00050 were sold via an online auction. In October 2017, the "Fabryka Broni" Łucznik "Radom" announced that the pistol would go back into series production there. Small batches with the start of production from October 2018 were planned.
