Side gun model 42

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The side rifle model 42 (also infantry knife 42 , combat knife 42 ) was a bayonet and multi-purpose knife of the Wehrmacht .

history

Developed in 1942 by the Wilhelm Gustloff works in Suhl and manufactured by Carl Eickhorn in Solingen , the "SG42" was intended to supplement and replace the original bayonet of the 98 carbine . Although this was basically tried and tested, there was a shortage of economic and utility knives, which were usually privately procured. The "SG42" was designed as a combat knife, but could also be attached as a bayonet.

After a consistently positive reception of several hundred units in the troop test in 1943, production was approved by Adolf Hitler , but this should only take place after the war because of the expense of converting production. In 1944 the Army Weapons Office placed an order for 10,000 pieces, production started, but only a small number was delivered because of the end of the war.

Analogous to the development of this multi-purpose knife, a worldwide development from the bayonet as a mere cutting and stabbing weapon to the multipurpose knife (saw, wire cutter) that can be planted began after the war .

Technical specifications

The SG42 were mostly made from stamped sheet metal parts. Sheaths and sheaths are cheap and quick to produce, molded phenolic resin parts . The blade length was 179.5 mm, the total length 304 mm (317 mm with scabbard).

The tool kit in the handle included a screwdriver, knife, awl, and corkscrew. The protective bar of the handle served as a sleeve extractor .
