Barbara Romanowicz is the daughter of the Polish publisher Kazimierz Romanowicz and his wife, the Polish writer and translator Zofia Romanowiczowa . She studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de jeunes filles Mathematics (completion 1974) and acquired in 1975 at both the Harvard University a Masters in applied physics , and at the University of Paris VI , a Doctorat de 3 e cycle in astronomy , 1979 at the University of Paris VII a Ph.D. (Doctorat d'état) in geophysics. From 1978 she worked for the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) at the Institut de physique du globe de Paris , where she developed the worldwide seismological network GEOSCOPE - interrupted by postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1979–1981. In 1991 she became director of the seismological laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), where she set up an earthquake early warning system in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey . She has held the chair for the physics of the Earth's interior at the Collège de France since 2011 . Her working group is also still active at UCB, where she continues to hold a professorship for geophysics.

Romanowicz explores deep layers in the inner structure of the earth using seismological data and mathematical models. She also deals with earthquakes and the associated laws of scale , as well as with modern seismic and geophysical broadband observations.
