Alexei Alexandrovich Ostroumow ( Russian Алексей Александрович Остроумов ; born January 29 . Jul / 10. February  1858 greg. In Simbirsk , † 1925 ) was a Russian zoologist , hydro biologist and university professor .

Life

Ostroumow attended the Simbirsk Gymnasium from 1874–1878 and then studied at the Imperial University of Kazan , graduating in 1882. During his studies he worked in the zoological cabinet headed by Nikolai Mikhailovich Melnikov . He remained at the university and was preparing for a scholarship to a zoology - Professor ago. In 1883 he was sent to the New Russian University in Odessa and worked in the Sevastopol Zoological Station . In 1884 he passed the master's degree in zoology, whereupon he was sent to the zoological station in Naples .

After returning to Kazan in 1886 , Ostroumow became a private lecturer in comparative histology . In 1887 he defended his master’s dissertation on the systematics and morphology of the moss animals in the Sevastopol Bay. Ostroumow held lectures on histology and zoology of vertebrates at the University of Kazan and continued his embryological and hydrobiological investigations. In 1888 he defended his doctoral thesis on the development of lizards . His main area of ​​work, however, was ichthyology , where he focused on the sterlet .

From 1891 Ostroumow headed the Sevastopol Zoological Station. He took part in the 2nd Black Sea - Deep Sea Expedition in 1891 and examined the fauna of the Black, Azov and Marmara Seas as well as the fauna of the estuaries of the rivers on the north coast of the Black Sea.

In August 1897 Ostroumow was appointed professor of zoology at the University of Kazan. In December 1897 he became a member of the Society of Naturalists at the University of Kazan. In 1898 he traveled to the Caspian Sea with the support of the Society of Naturalists . He familiarized himself with the fauna of the Volga and its flat estuary, as well as the Kura estuary . As head of the university's zoological cabinet, he completed the collection of fauna in the Peter-the-Great Bay of the Zoological Museum founded by Eduard Friedrich Eversmann . Ostroumow compiled a complete catalog of the museum by having the zoologist Sergei Alexejewitsch Sernow , who was in Kazan as an administrative exile , catalog the collections. He was very committed to women's education. Under his chairmanship the meetings of the Society for the Establishment of Higher Physics - Mathematics Courses for Women in Kazan took place, for which he was assistant to the director.

In 1912 Ostroumow was elected President of the Society of Natural Scientists at the University of Kazan as successor to Boris Konstantinowitsch Polenov . In 1916 Ostroumow founded a hydrobiological station in the mouth of the Swijaga , which then became the zoological station of the University of Kazan. After the October Revolution in 1919 he became an honorary member of the Society of Naturalists at Kazan University. In 1925 the Moscow Society of Naturalists elected him an honorary member. He was also an honorary member of the Perm Society of Naturalists and a full member of several scientific societies.
