Boris Konstantinovich Polenov ( Russian Борис Константинович Поленов * August 26 . Jul / 7. September  1859 greg. In Pulkovo , † 29. January 1923 in Perm ) was a Russian geologist , Petrologe , mineralogist and university teachers .

Life

Polenow's father Konstantin Pawlowitsch Polenow got a job in the Urals after Polenov's birth , so that Polenow grew up there. He attended the 2nd Kazan grammar school and the Ekaterinburg grammar school, which he left in 1878. He then studied at the physical - mathematical faculty of the University of St. Petersburg with Alexander Alexandrowitsch Inostranzew with graduation in 1882. He then stayed at the chair of geology in order to prepare for a professorship . In the summer of 1882 he took part in an expedition to the Altai . In November 1882 he became a collaborative member and in May 1884 a full member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists . 1884–1886 he carried out petrographic studies in the Urals.

In 1885, Polenov became the custodian of the Geological Cabinet at the University of St. Petersburg. He further participated in expeditions to 1,887 in the expedition in the Ujesd Veliky Ustyug , from 1888 to 1889 in the expedition Vasily Vasilievich Dokuchaev in the Poltava Governorate , from 1892 to 1893 on the new expedition to the North Urals with the discovery of gold - deposits and from 1894 on the almost annual expeditions to the Altai. Since 1892 he was one of the editors of Brockhaus-Efron and wrote more than 200 articles on geology and paleontology . In 1904, Polenow was appointed professor to the chair of mineralogy and geology at the University of Kazan . At the same time he became president of the Society of Naturalists at the university. He devoted himself particularly to the development of the course on petrography of solidification rocks . To this end, Pyotr Ivanovich Krotow was sent to Munich to study with Ernst Weinschenk . After the death of Alexander Antonowitsch Stuckenberg in 1905, Polenov became chairman of the Kazan Society of Natural Scientists. In 1907, Polenow became the dean of the faculty of physics and mathematics at the University of Kazan. In 1913 he went on vacation in Kostroma Governorate .

In 1916, Polenov was sent to Perm to give the opening lecture of the Petrograd University branch . The branch became the new University of Perm , to which Polenow was transferred in July 1916. From October 1916 to October 1917 he was dean of the physics and mathematics faculty, after which Nikolai Viktorovich Kultaschew became dean. Polenow headed the chair for geology and mineralogy. He founded and directed the Geological Cabinet, into which he brought his own library with 1000 volumes and his collections from the family seat Pavlovskoye in Ujesd Kineshma . After the division of the chair, he took over the chair of geology.

After the October Revolution in the Russian Civil War , the University Council elected in May 1919 Polenov as a candidate for the economic conference in the Kolchak government in Omsk , where he met with Pavel Ivanovich Preobrazhensky , Minister of Education of that government . After Alexander Alexejewitsch Polkanow , the holder of the chair for mineralogy, left in 1920 , Polenow also took over this chair. From November 1920 to June 1921 he was Vice Rector of the University of Perm and Head of the Office of the Council for Student Affairs. After his death, Pavel Ivanovich Preobrazhensky headed the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Perm.

In the spring of 1913, in Kazan, Polenov's daughter Natalja married the lawyer Vladimir Fyodorowitsch Matveev , who became the founding dean of the law faculty at Perm University.

Polenow was buried in the cemetery of the Uspenski convent in Perm. The grave has not been preserved.
