Barbara Turner , actually Gloria Rose Turner (born July 14, 1936 in New York City , New York - † April 5, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ), was an American screenwriter and actress .

Life

Barbara Turner was married to actor Vic Morrow from 1957 to 1964 , with whom she had two daughters: actress Jennifer Jason Leigh and film producer Carrie Ann Morrow . Her second marriage was from 1968 to 1985 with the television director Reza Badiyi , with whom she had a third daughter, the actress Mina Badie .

Turner wrote emotionally complex films that deal with problematic interpersonal relationships. She starred on stage as well as in several films and television productions in the 1950s and 1960s before she began writing screenplays. In 1966 Morrow filmed her first screenplay Deathwatch , an adaptation of the play Liebesgesänge by Jean Genet . She received an Emmy nomination in 1977 for her screenplay for the television film The War Between the Tates .

Barbara Turner worked several times with her daughter Jennifer Jason Leigh: In 1995 she co-produced the film Georgia , for which Turner also wrote the screenplay. The film depicts the conflicted relationship between two sisters (played by Leigh and Mare Winningham ). In 2001, Turner helped her daughter script the film The Anniversary Party , which Leigh also produced and directed (with Alan Cumming ).

In 2000, Turner wrote the screenplay for the Jackson Pollock biography Pollock . Together with actress Neve Campbell she wrote the film The Company - The Ensemble (2003), a portrait of the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago . The director was Turner's longtime good friend Robert Altman .

In 2012, Hemingway & Gellhorn was the film adaptation of their screenplay about the love story between Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn , directed by Philip Kaufman, with Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman in the leading roles.
