Barmer ( Hindi : बाड़मेर, Bāṛmer ) is a district in the western Indian state of Rajasthan . It is located in West Rajasthan in the Thar Desert and borders Pakistan . The area is 28,387 km², the population is 1,964,835 (2001). The administrative seat is the city of the same name .

The Barmer district is rural, with only 7.4% of the population living in cities. 52.7% of the population are men. 58.99% of the population can read and write, 72.76% for men, 43.45% for women.
The vast majority of the population consider themselves Hinduism (86.27%), 11.8% are Muslims , Jainism only plays a minor role at 1.8%.
The most common languages are Rajasthani , Hindi and English .
Climate and nature
The Barmer District is located in the Thar Desert. The lowest temperatures are in January and fluctuate between about 10 ° C to 26 ° C, in summer temperatures up to 43 ° C are common (May). The annual rainfall averages 280 mm, but with stronger fluctuations due to the monsoon . Heavy monsoon rains can quickly lead to flooding, as was the case in 2006, when 103 people lost their lives. Malaria outbreaks can also occur as a result of the floods .
The largest river is the Luni , which carries brackish water .
