history
Barzig was first mentioned in 1403 as Barczk . The place name can be traced back to the Old Sorbian word bart . This means forest hive and has forest beekeeping back. The place was named Bartzk in 1434 and Barce in 1880 . In 1602 the place succeeded together with the neighboring Dobristroh , the later free hoof, the compulsory services for 5500 guilders from the manorial rule. In the Thirty Years' War in 1637, the place was completely burned down. In 1635 Lower Lusatia and Barzig came to the Electorate of Saxony and belonged to the district of Luckau as an exclave with Dobristroh, who later became Freiehufen , and Drochow . In 1816, after the Congress of Vienna , Lower Lusatia came to Prussia and Barzig and Dobristroh moved to the Prussian office of Senftenberg , which was incorporated into the Calau district.
Sorbian was spoken in Barzig until the 19th century. When Arnošt Muka visited the place in the 1880s, he only met three men and two old women who spoke Sorbian.
From 1864 two windmills were operated in the village. A school building was built in Barzig from 1902 to 1903. The Barziger volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1935. Despite the establishment of agricultural production cooperatives , there was no longer a farming community in the village as early as 1975. From 1992 Barzig was part of the Großräschen office . On December 31, 2001, the place was incorporated into the city of Großräschen.
