Battlefield V is a first-person shooter developed by the Swedish computer game manufacturer EA DICE , which was released by Electronic Arts worldwide on November 20, 2018 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . This is the 16th part of the Battlefield game series.

Single player

action

The single player campaign as well as the multiplayer mode take place in the scenario of the Second World War . As with the predecessor Battlefield 1, there is no coherent story, but individual "war stories", short campaigns, each with its own setting. Three war stories were available for publication, a fourth was submitted later.

In Nordlys , the player experiences the Norwegian heavy water sabotage from the perspective of a resistance fighter .

Under no flag is about a criminal who is recruited for the British special unit Special Boat Service to fight the Air Force in North Africa .

Tirailleur deals with the treatment of the Tirailleurs sénégalais by the other French troops and shows Operation Dragoon from the perspective of a young Senegalese .

The fourth war story, The Last Tiger , published after the release, shows Cologne, completely bombed in 1945, from the perspective of a German tank commander of the last German tiger .

Gameplay

In the campaign, linear sections and freer levels alternate. In the latter, it is up to the player himself in which order he fulfills the mission objectives, or whether he prefers to avoid opponents or seek direct confrontation. Vehicles and aircraft distributed in the areas can be used freely. Most of the weapons and means of transport, as well as controls, textures and the underlying gameplay were taken from the multiplayer. Here the player has the opportunity to try out all weapons and vehicles freely and to get a feel for the gameplay.

Development and publication

DICE announced the first details about Battlefield V on May 23, 2018. Further information was presented at the EA Play press conference near E3 2018 in June. DICE has declared that, unlike Battlefield 1, there is no provision for the use of additional chargeable downloadable content or loot boxes. New content will be added to the game for free for all players over time. This decision was made after the outrage over the loot box system in Star Wars Battlefront II . The game was originally scheduled to be released on October 19th, but has been postponed to November 20th to allow developers to make further changes. Battlefield 5 is the first computer game to support ray tracing in real time and is supported by Nvidia RTX . The Battle Royale game mode Firestorm was released on March 25, 2019 .

Premium Pass

Since Battlefield 3 there has been the so-called Premium Pass in the Battlefield series. The player could purchase this separately in order to receive various bonuses such as early access to the game or other DLCs. In addition to the Pay2Win allegations, this model created a split player base: only players who had bought the Premium Pass could play the new cards and modes. As a result, DLC cards were not taken into account in the rotation on most public game servers, since a large number of players would otherwise not be able to play on the server.

For this reason, DICE decided to remove the Premium Pass for Battlefield V and instead to implement a so-called "Live Service Model" with Tides of War , in which additional content is submitted free of charge after the release, into the game.

When Battlefield V was released, there was once a selection of a total of eight different multiplayer maps, which have been steadily expanded since then and will continue to do so in the future thanks to the “Tides of War” live service. Unlike in previous parts of the series, these are available for the first time free of charge for all owners of the main game.

• Bent steel , a river landscape around a partially destroyed bridge in northern France on the Scheldt
• Arras , a highly competitive village in the middle of fields in France
• Rotterdam , part of the port city of the same name with a train station in the center
• Annihilation , a theater of war between destroyed houses and a partly destroyed cathedral in Rotterdam
• Airfield , a desert with a hangar in the center and many supply and outposts
• Hammada , a large rocky desert with ruins and a bridge in the center, which can be destroyed
• Narvik , a snowy coastal village in Norway
• Fjell 652 , a snowy mountain above Narvik

Chapter 5: Pacific War

• Pacific storm , a series of small islands on a very large Japanese island
• Wake Island ( based on the American suburb of the same name, Wake ), an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean . This is initially occupied by the Japanese and has to be recaptured by the Americans during the round. This is a card that has already been featured in numerous previous parts.

Chapter 6: Into the Jungle

• Solomon Islands , a partially open jungle area with many Japanese outposts on the island state of the same name

Discontinuation of the live service offering

Electronic Arts announced on April 23, 2020 that Battlefield V will get its last major update as part of the Tides of War in June 2020 with Chapter 6 and that the game will no longer be provided with regular content in the future. The last update should again contain weapons, gadgets, a new map in the desert and bug fixes. Furthermore, the community server and the anti-cheat system are to be expanded.

Firestorm

On March 25, 2019 Battlefield V by the game mode was Firestorm (Engl. Firestorm ) expanded. This is a battle royale mode . Here players fight against each other on a map. Whoever survives last has won. A ring of fire (hence the name Firestorm ) limits the map further and further, so that the players meet each other. The development was outsourced to the Criterion Games studio . The number of players is limited to 64 players per round. You can play Firestorm either solo or in a team.

reception

The sales expectations for the game from Publisher Electronic Arts were not met in the first quarter. The game was sold 7.3 million times from October to December 2018, and 8.3 million sales were expected. However, this does not include the Origin Access Premier subscription model , which already includes the game.
