The Battweiler Höhe nature reserve is located in the Südwestpfalz district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The 24 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 2003 , is located in the Battweiler district in the Zweibrücken-Land association . It extends on the mountain range of the same name between Battweiler and Niederhausen in a north-easterly direction. The area is about 1.3 km long and 250 m wide.

Protection purpose

The protective purpose of the Battweiler Höhe nature reserve is the maintenance, development and restoration of limestone grasslands and extensive grassland in this area. This also includes the preservation of the local trees, hedges, and forest and forest fringes. These are habitat for rare and sometimes endangered wild animal species.

The networked biotope system of the limestone grasslands of the Zweibrücken hill country is to be preserved for scientific reasons in addition to its special character and beauty.

Flora and fauna

Due to the protective measures on the Battweiler Höhe, the limestone grasslands available there were expanded and were able to develop into biotopes in which various rare and protected plant species such as mountain germander , mosquito handelwort , horn orchid , common fringed gentian and pasque flowers grow. Care is provided by grazing with sheep and, if necessary, mowing by hand.

In 2017 and 2018, the district administration of Südwestpfalz expanded the areas for limestone grasslands on the Battweiler Höhe by purchasing additional areas within the nature reserve. This means that areas previously used for arable farming are to be reused for nature conservation.
