The Falkenburg-Tiergarten nature reserve is located in the Südwestpfalz district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

description

The almost 36 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 1984 , is located west of the eastern community of Wilgartswiesen in the Hauenstein community and north of federal highway 10 . It extends in a north-westerly direction for a length of about one kilometer parallel to the K56 county road.

In the area is the 336.9  m above sea level. NHN high Schloßberg with the ruins of the Falkenburg . The former zoo, which also gave the area its name, was located north of the Schloßberg. It goes back to Count Hanns Heinrich, who, as the owner of the Liningian part of the Falkenburg, had a zoo laid out for hunting in 1553 . A stream rises in the northwest of the nature reserve, which leaves the area in the east and flows into the Queich in Wilgartswiesen .

Protection purpose

The protection purpose of the nature reserve Falkenburg-Tiergarten is to maintain the protection of the near-natural to natural, site-typical animal and plant community of the zoo and the castle hill . These include above all the old wood components on the northern slope of the castle hill, the rock flora on the castle rock as well as the wetlands and waters of the zoo.

In addition, the area has a special geoscientific importance as Zeugenberg and Woogtal and is protected because of the rarity and endangerment of communities and habitats as well as the special nature of the landscape.
