Beloved Jane (Original title: Becoming Jane ) is a US-British biopic about Jane Austen by Julian Jarrold from 2007.

action

Jane Austen grew up in the agricultural region of Hampshire at the end of the 18th century as a daughter of the Reverend Austen . She is full of energy, plays the piano and writes. Her family wants her to marry rich Mr. Wisley, but they resist. This outraged her mother, who married out of love and then had to live in modest circumstances.

Jane meets the Irish-born Tom Lefroy (Thomas Langlois Lefroy) who wants to become a lawyer. He criticizes her attempts at writing and gives her the novel 'The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling' by Henry Fielding to read. They both eventually fall in love. Lefroy introduces her to his wealthy uncle, who lives in London , and wants to ask him for a blessing on their marriage, but he discovers that someone has denounced Jane to his uncle as a dowry hunter . Since Tom is completely dependent on his uncle's money, he bows to his uncle's ban on marriage. After a short separation, the two decide to run away together. However, while a carriage breaks down on their way to Scotland, Jane finds out from a letter that she discovers in Tom's coat pocket that his family in Ireland is living in very poor conditions and is dependent on his financial support, which he regularly gives them. Finally, Jane explains to Tom that, considering the poverty of their two families, she has come to the conclusion that there is no livelihood to start a family with him. Tom tries in vain to dispel their doubts by pointing out their love for one another. Shortly thereafter, Jane boarded a carriage in the opposite direction back to her family.

Many years later the two meet again. Jane is now a successful and well-known writer and is still single. Tom Lefroy, who has since achieved fame and fortune as Lord Chief Justice in Ireland, is married and named his eldest daughter after Jane, who is a great admirer of the author. For her sake, Jane finally gives a reading for once in which she reads from her work " Pride and Prejudice ", for whose main characters, Miss Elizabeth and Mister Darcy - according to the interpretation of the film - she and Tom Lefroy are said to have acted as godparents.

Reviews

Derek Elley wrote in Variety magazine on March 8, 2007 that the film was similar to Pride and Prejudice in all aspects but the title . Anne Hathaway show her talent.

In the review written for the BBC on March 9, 2007, Stella Papamichael praised the charm of the leading actors. The film is first a social satire, then it becomes a melodrama. Anne Hathaway shows "delightful, dignified élan" .

The lexicon of international films says: “ Not a biography, but a purely fictional melodrama that transfers the literary structures of the Jane Austen novels to the protagonist Jane Austen. This results in both elegant cinema and a sensitive portrait of society, which, of course, does without the author's ironic, distant tone. "
