Benjamin Barz (born August 8, 1983 in Bad Tölz , Bavaria ) is a German ice hockey player who has been playing in the position of a striker at ESV Waldkirchen in the ice hockey district league since the 2014/15 season .

Career

Barz began his career at ESV Waldkirchen and then moved to the boys' team at Deggendorfer EC . As a junior, Barz played two years for the Deggendorfer EC in the Oberliga Süd and the Junior Bundesliga, where he became German Junior Champion.

Benjamin Barz went through all the youth national teams of the DEB and has 64 youth international matches. He also took part in the U18 World Cup in 2001 (5th place) in Finland and the U20 World Cup in 2003 (9th place, relegation) in Canada and, at the age of 21, played two games for the German national team at the Deutschland Cup .

For the 2002/03 season Barz moved to the Landshut Cannibals in the 2nd Bundesliga and was equipped with a support license from the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , which enabled him to make his debut in the German Ice Hockey League that same year . Due to his good performance in the promotion license assignments for the Ice Tigers, the specialist magazine Eishockey News rewarded him with the second place in the "Rookie of the Year" rating of this season.

From the 2003/04 season , Benjamin Barz played a total of 148 games for the Ice Tigers in three years, scoring ten goals and providing 24 templates. In his second season for the Ice Tigers he was nominated by national coach Creg Poss for the Germany Cup, where he played his first two international matches for the German national team. For the 2006/07 season Barz moved to the DEG Metro Stars , with whom he reached the playoff semifinals and thus completed his most successful DEL season in sporting terms.

For the 2007/08 season Barz moved to the EHC Munich in the 2nd Bundesliga and began studying medicine at the LMU Munich at the same time. In April 2008 Barz signed for another season in Munich. In the second season for the EHC Munich, he just missed promotion to the DEL (1st Bundesliga) with the playoff final defeat against Bietigheim and had to be satisfied with the runner-up. In July 2009 he signed with EV Landsberg 2000 in the ice hockey league . He led the team into the playoffs as captain, but unfortunately retired in the first round. After the first season in Landsberg he was voted "best defensive striker" in the league by the specialist magazine Ice Hockey News and was among the top ten in the ranking of the best center strikers. He played two seasons in Landsberg and still had a contract until the 2011/12 season, but this was void after the EV Landsberg filed for bankruptcy. In July 2011 his move to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to SC Riessersee was announced. In his first season for SC Riessersee Barz missed the playoffs but was able to prevent the team from being relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga successfully in the playdowns. As one of the best German goalscorers (12 goals with playdowns), he made a significant contribution, although he was out for a long time at the beginning of the season due to a hand injury. Originally, Barz had ended his engagement at SC Riessersee after the 2011/12 season in order to devote half a year to his doctoral thesis as part of a research semester. He also wanted to compete for the EHF Passau Black Hawks in the major league. However, after they retired to the district league, Barz came back to SC Riessersee. The 2012/2013 season was generally mixed for Barz and he could not match the goal scoring of the first season for SC Riessersee. Due to the bankruptcy of the Hanover Indians shortly before the end of the season, the playdowns were not played, so the team could not relegate, although the playoffs were clearly missed. For the 2013/2014 season, Barz moved to the Bavarian League for TEV Miesbach to devote more time to his practical year in the course of studying medicine. His father played as a goalkeeper in Miesbach in the early 1970s. With the TEV he was able to create a successful season and only just missed the playoff final. The small final could be won, so that the season ended with a third place. Despite a knee injury at the beginning of the season, Barz was the team's top scorer and was voted the best striker of the season in the Bayern League by the Bayernhockey.com portal. For the 2014/2015 season, Barz rejoined his home club ESV Waldkirchen in the district league. There he plays with his younger brother Dominik.
