Benjamin Schmid (violinist)

Benjamin Schmid (born September 13, 1968 in Vienna ) is an Austrian violinist .

Live and act

He received his training in Vienna, Salzburg and Philadelphia. In 1991 he won the 2nd Leopold Mozart International Violin Competition in Augsburg (Mozart Prize - 1st Prize). In 1992 he won the Mozart, Beethoven and Audience Awards at the same time at the Carl Flesch Competition.

His repertoire includes works for violin and orchestra, chamber music and jazz (Hommage à Grappelli ) . One focus is on works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert , Alban Berg , Karl Goldmark , Erich Wolfgang Korngold , Fritz Kreisler and Kurt Muthspiel that were created in Vienna . As a jazz musician, he presents himself under the name Beni Schmid .

Benjamin Schmid has appeared repeatedly as a soloist at concerts by the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra .

Since 1986 he has appeared regularly at the Salzburg Festival . Since 2000 he has repeatedly juxtaposed the solo works for violin Johann Sebastian Bach and Eugène Ysaÿes in a three-evening cycle .

Benjamin Schmid plays the Stradivarius violin "ex Viotti" 1718, which is provided by the Austrian National Bank .

Schmid lives with his wife, the pianist Ariane Haering in Salzburg , where he also holds a professorship at the Mozarteum .

Award

Schmid's album Hot Club Jazz (Gramola) was included in the list of the best of the German Record Critics ' Award in 2015 . Diknu Schneeberger , Joschi Schneeberger and Martin Spitzer play in his band .
