Bernd Klüser (* 1945 in Wuppertal ) is a German gallery owner, editor and art collector.

Beginnings

In 1968 Bernd Klüser moved from Wuppertal to Munich to study law there. He completed his studies with the first and second state exams and was admitted to the bar in 1974. During his studies, a project-related collaboration with the Heiner Friedrich Gallery in Munich began in 1969 , which resulted in initial contacts with artists such as Gerhard Richter , Blinky Palermo , Georg Baselitz , Sigmar Polke and Gilbert & George .

Schellmann and Klüser

From 1970 the editorial collaboration began with his fellow student Jörg Schellmann . One focus was the publication of multiples by Joseph Beuys (including the publication of the first catalog raisonné of the artist's editions, which now has eight editions). The company was named in 1975 as "Edition Schellmann und Klüser" with rooms at Maximilianstrasse 12 and later in New York. The joint edition existed until 1985 and was then continued as "Edition Schellmann" (later Schellmann Art ). The edition program, which included graphics and multiples by internationally renowned artists early on, was honored with a special exhibition in 1989 by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1976 Schellmann and Klüser realized the exhibition of the Joseph Beuys environment “ show your wound ”. The acquisition of the work by the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus triggered an art scandal in Munich in 1979 and subsequently made it easier for Munich museums to grapple with international contemporary art.

Gallery Klüser

In 1978, Bernd Klüser also opened his own gallery at Maximilianstrasse 12, which initially operated as “Galerie Schellmann und Klüser”. The international profile was determined on the one hand by the continuous close cooperation with Joseph Beuys and from 1980 by exhibition projects, including graphic editions such as the "Lenin Portraits" with Andy Warhol until the death of both artists in 1986 and 1987. On the other hand, there was the presentation, often for the first time in Germany or Europe, young artists at the time like Tony Cragg , the American Robert Mangold , Cindy Sherman , Robert Longo , David Salle , Jack Goldstein , Matt Mullican and the Italian Transavanguardia like Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino . Francis Picabia , Jannis Kounellis , Asger Jorn and Gilbert & George were also exhibited, among others. In 1985 Schellmann and Klüser parted ways into "Edition Schellmann" and "Galerie Bernd Klüser". The "Galerie Bernd Klüser" moved into two floors in Georgenstrasse in a representative old-style villa on the park of the Munich Art Academy. She expanded her program with the German representation of the estate of Robert Motherwell , exhibitions by, among others, Alex Katz , Christian Boltanski , Jan Fabre , Julião Sarmento , Olaf Metzel , Blinky Palermo, and with a focus on Sean Scully . Group exhibitions such as “The Frozen Leopard” or “Reflections on Light” completed the program. In 2001 daughter Julia Klüser joined the gallery and a short time later became a partner of the company. In 2002, the “Galerie Klüser 2” opened another location in the Munich Museum Quarter. Larger exhibitions have now been shown in both galleries and more and more younger artists have been introduced, such as Bernardí Roig , Jorinde Voigt , Isca Greenfield-Sanders , Natalia Załuska , Lori Nix , Gregor Hildebrandt and Constantin Luser .

Publishing and editing activities

Their own editing activities have continued since 1985 with numerous group portfolios, suites and single sheets by their gallery artists. Parallel to the gallery work, a large number of publications were created in collaboration with the artists, but also with Ernst Jünger , Hans-Georg Gadamer and the estate of James Joyce . The standard work “The Art of the Exhibition” was published on the history of the art exhibition. In addition, Bernd Klüser published numerous texts (often for museum catalogs) and made films about EW Nay , Joseph Beuys and the Basel exhibition “Sculpture in the 20th Century”.

Positions and Awards

In 1996, Bernd Klüser took on a guest professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for seven semesters. In 2014, Bernd Klüser and his wife Verena, who had worked in the gallery for many years, were awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. In 2016 Bernd Klüser received the FEAGA Lifetime Award from the European Gallery Association for exemplary and sustainable art mediation in Basel.
