Magnus Thulstrup Bagge (born August 9, 1825 in Kristiansund , Norway , † 1894 in Blankenburg , Duchy of Braunschweig ) was a Norwegian landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Labrofossen (Labrofoss) , Numedalslågen waterfall , 1847, Oslo National Museum

The son of postmaster Halvor Bagge (1787–1843) and Fredrikke Christine Hiorth (1798–1833) grew up with the siblings Halvor Johan Bagge (* 1828 Fredrikshald, Østfold; teacher) and Elenore Dorothea Marie Bagge (* 1829 Fredrikshald, Østfold) . After the mother's early death, the father married a second time; this marriage resulted in several half-siblings. Bagge attended - after several years as a seaman - first the Royal Drawing School of Christiania and from 1843 or 1844 for three years the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen . During this time he took private lessons from Jens Peter Møller (1783-1854). He exhibited Norwegian landscapes in Copenhagen from 1845 to 1847, and in 1846 and 1847 for the first time at the Christiania Art Association. In 1850 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he became a private student of August Leu and belonged to the circle around Hans Fredrik Gude and Adolph Tidemand . In 1852 and 1858 he received government travel grants after sending several pictures to Norway. Study trips took him through Germany, Switzerland and Norway, especially in the regions of Valdres and Telemark . From 1850 to 1853 and from 1862 to 1867 he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . He later moved to Berlin , where he lived until the 1890s and was a member of the Berlin Artists' Association from 1872 to 1890.

In the 1850s, Bagge taught the later playwright Henrik Ibsen in oil painting. This used him as a model for the literary character Hjalmar Ekdal in the play The Wild Duck . Bagge exhibited in Norwegian art associations until 1860. He was represented at Scandinavian exhibitions in Stockholm in 1866 and in Copenhagen in 1872. Bagge was friends with the doctor and poet Friedrich Wilhelm Weber , whom he inspired to write the story Goliath (1892) by reporting an experience in the Norwegian mountains .
