Bernhard Zimburg
Bernhard Zimburg (born May 31, 1954 in Bad Gastein ) is an Austrian diplomat . He was the Austrian ambassador to Japan between July 2012 and August 2016 and has been the ambassador to Australia since September 2016 .
Life
Bernhard Zimburg attended an elementary school and a modern language grammar school in Baden . Afterwards he volunteered for a year in the armed forces from 1973 . There he completed a hunting command training . In 1974 he began to study law at the University of Innsbruck , which he completed in 1979 with a doctorate. From 1979 to 1980 Bernhard Zimburg studied at the College of Europe in Bruges , from 1980 to 1981 he was trained as a trade delegate at the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce .
Bernhard Zimburg is married and has two daughters.
Diplomatic career
Bernhard Zimburg joined the Austrian Foreign Ministry in May 1982 .
Back office
In the back office he was first assigned to the departments for integration and bilateral culture, and in 1984 to the departments of the Council of Europe , Foreign Policy Report, Policy Issues and Consular Affairs. From 1993 to 1994 he was assigned to the Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as Transcaucasia and Central Asia departments, and in January 1995 he became head of the Central Europe department. In January 1996 Bernhard Zimburg became the national coordinator of the Central European Initiative (CEI) founded by Erhard Busek in 1990 . From 2006 to 2007 Zimburg was head of the East Asia and Oceania department in the Austrian Foreign Ministry, and from 2007 to 2012 he was head and envoy of the department for Asia and Oceania, Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
External sales
In 1983 he became an attaché at the Austrian embassy in Poland . In 1985 he was the first to be assigned to the Embassy in Nigeria . He stayed there until 1988, when he joined the US Embassy in Washington as a science councilor , where he stayed until 1992.
Bernhard Zimburg's first assignment as ambassador was in Algiers : in Algeria he was Austrian ambassador from 1998 to 2001. From there he moved to Jakarta . In Indonesia he was ambassador from 2001 to 2006 with co-accreditation to Singapore and East Timor (Timor-Leste). His successor there was Klaus Wölfer . Bernhard Zimburg is one of the founding members of the Swiss German University in Indonesia.
From July 2012, Bernhard Zimburg was the successor to Jutta Stefan-Bastl as ambassador in Tokyo , and since September 2016 he has been ambassador to Canberra .
