Bischoffingen is a district of the town of Vogtsburg in the Kaiserstuhl with about 640 inhabitants. Like the whole of the Kaiserstuhl , it is shaped by viticulture.

geography

location

The district forms a bay within the western Kaiserstuhl, which is open to the northwest, surrounded by volcanic peaks and ridges in the north, east and south and largely lined with loess . The highest point (442 m) is the Mondhalde in the east. The Riedbach, the only body of water, flows to the west. The earliest traces of settlement can be found in its vicinity.

Neighboring places

In the northwest, Bischoffingen borders on the Jechtingen district of the municipality of Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl and, clockwise from there, the Sasbach district of Leiselheim, the district of Kiechlinsbergen of the city of Endingen am Kaiserstuhl and the Vogtsburg districts of Oberbergen , Oberrotweil and Burkheim am Kaiserstuhl .

history

Certificate of Adalberus II.

The district is a treasure trove of prehistory and early history. In 1975 the 3.30 m long tusk of a mammoth was found, which is "a beautiful eye-catcher in the community hall today". Traces of settlement have been found since the band pottery epoch of the Neolithic , i.e. since around 5000 BC. Chr., Continuously.

"Nomen est piscofigin et seuelden"

Presumably as a gift from Emperor Heinrich II , the village came to the Principality of Basel - hence the name. It is first mentioned in 1010. In the - perhaps forged - document, Bishop Adalbero II of Basel gives "praedium cuius nomen est piscofigin et seuelden cum omnibus usualibus" - "his possessions in Bischoffingen and Seefelden with all accessories" to the Benedictine monastery of St. Cyriak in Sulzburg . The Üsenbergers were the governors of the Basel bishops . When they died out in 1379, the bailiwick passed to the Margraves of Baden-Hachberg , who bequeathed them to the Baden sideline of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach . With the secularization of 1806 , Bischoffingen finally came to the Grand Duchy of Baden and shared its fate. Since 1924 it has belonged to the Freiburg district and its legal successor, the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district .

On January 1, 1975, Bischoffingen was incorporated into the town of Oberrotweil, whose name was changed on April 15, 1977 to Vogtsburg in the Kaiserstuhl.

Culture

Winegrowers' farmhouses with high stone wine cellars and half-timbered living rooms above have been preserved, for example the house “Unter der Lauben” with two weather canopies.

The Evangelical Church of St. Laurentius , first mentioned in 1139, resembles a fortified church with its tower . Its choir is adorned with frescoes from the 15th century.
