Blackfish (German reference title Der Killerwal ) is an American documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite . The film deals with the fate Tilikums , one in since 1983 captivity living Orca , the three in the death of people was involved. The film celebrated its world premiere on January 19, 2013 at the Sundance Film Festival .

The documentary focuses on Tilikum's capture off the coast of Iceland in 1983 , the clashes and incidents with other captive orcas in the Sealand of the Pacific Park, mistreatment by trainers and other incidents such as the animals being kept overnight in a tiny one Steel containers that, according to Cowperthwaite, contributed to the animal's aggressive behavior. Cowperthwaite began working on the film after hearing of Dawn Brancheau's (Tilikum's trainer) death . Most of all, it was a reaction to the statement that the whale only pulled the trainer into the water because Brancheau wore her hair in a ponytail.
SeaWorld Entertainment refused to participate in the production of Blackfish and later said the film was inconsistent with the facts:
Blackfish [...] is inaccurate and misleading and, regrettably, exploits a tragedy [...] [T] he film paints a distorted picture that withholds [...] key facts about SeaWorld — among them ... that SeaWorld rescues, rehabilitates and returns to the wild hundreds of wild animals every year, and that SeaWorld commits millions of dollars annually to conservation and scientific research.

Reviews
The reviews were mostly positive, resulting in a 98% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 119 reviews, and a rating of 83 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 33 reviews. At the IMDb , it received a rating of 8.1 / 10, based on 43,673 reviews (as of May 2016).
“ Blackfish is not a documentary that excites you from the cinema. Fortunately, Cowperthwaite does not use film-like reenactments at all, instead there are short, disturbing excerpts from the real accident videos. Your film does not leave its viewers mainly with the feeling of being well entertained, but with in-depth knowledge and probably also a certain opinion on its topic. "
Effects
The ending of the 3D animated film Finding Dory was reworked after Pixar's creative directors, John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, saw the film. The representation of a marine park in the film has been changed.
The reaction to the documentary prompted bands and singers Heart , Barenaked Ladies , Willie Nelson , Martina McBride , .38 Special , Cheap Trick , REO Speedwagon , Pat Benatar , The Beach Boys , Trace Adkins , Trisha Yearwood and Joan Jett to appear at SeaWorld ( Orlando ) and Busch Gardens Tampa .
Animal rights activists see a link between the release of Blackfish and the 13% decrease in the number of visitors to SeaWorld in the US between January and March 2014.
