Blairsville is a city and also the county seat of Union County in the US state of Georgia with 652 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Blairsville is located in the very north of the US state in the Blue Ridge Mountains and about 15 km from the North Carolina border. The nearest major cities are Atlanta (140 km south), Chattanooga (140 km west) and Knoxville (160 km north).
To the west of the city are the southern foothills of Lake Nottely , which is fed by the river of the same name . The headwaters of the river is Vogel State Park south of the city, which in turn is part of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest . Around ten kilometers east of the city as the crow flies, Brasstown Bald is Georgia's highest point.
history
Blairsville was made the administrative seat of Union County in 1835 and is named after the soldier James Blair, who served in the American Revolutionary War.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 652 inhabitants were distributed over 249 inhabited households, which results in an average of 1.92 people per household. There are a total of 301 households.
49.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.68 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 22.9% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 39.4% of all households.
17.0% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 36.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 58.7% of the population were male and 41.3% were female.
91.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 4.6% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 0.2% as Asian Americans . 2.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 4.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 16,766 USD , while 26.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.
