history
The area of what is now Bloomington was on the corner of a large forest that was inhabited by Kickapoo Indians. The first European settlers settled there around 1820. The branch, first Keg Grove , later called Blooming Grove, was named a county seat on December 25, 1820 after McLean County was founded.
With the establishment of McLean County the formation of a county seat was decided. However, the exact location should be determined later. James Allin, one of the supporters of the new county, offered a lot of 240,000 square feet of his property for the founding of the city. His offer was accepted and Bloomington was built. The land was auctioned off in a busy and noisy auction on Independence Day in 1831. At the time, roads were few, but the soils were rich and attracted new farmers who started their businesses in the newly formed county. People came from all over the world to do business in the city center, including Abraham Lincoln , who worked as a lawyer in nearby Springfield .
Illinois Wesleyan University was founded in Bloomington in 1850.
In 1900 a fire destroyed the old town hall and the police station as well as most of the city center, especially north and east of the court. However, the destroyed buildings were quickly rebuilt.
During the first two decades of the 20th century, Bloomington continued to grow. Agriculture, the construction of highways and railways, and the growth of insurance, mainly state agricultural insurance, all influenced the growth of Bloomington and its city center. The city center became a regional shopping center that attracted trade from neighboring counties.
