economy

After the Superior Coach Company , part of the Sheller-Globe Corporation since 1969 , ceased production of school buses in Lima in 1980, three former employees founded Mid Bus , a car company in 1982 in which they manufactured much smaller buses. While the earlier school buses had up to 66 seats, Mid Bus initially manufactured a bus for 16 people. This concept led to the rapid growth of the company, which then moved to a much larger factory in Bluffton. In 1998, Mid Bus was taken over by Collins Industries . In September 2007, Collins Industries announced that it would move bus production to the company's main facility in South Hutchinson , Kansas .

In Bluffton, Grob Systems , a Bavarian manufacturer of machine tools for the automotive industry, and DTR, a joint venture between Duramax and the Japanese Tokai Rubber , a supplier of rubber parts for the automotive industry, stayed.

history

Bluffton was settled in northwest Ohio in 1832. The wooded landscape reminded the European settlers of their homeland. They cleared the forest and the soil turned out to be particularly fertile. Sawmills along Riley Creek processed the wood. Soon there were shops and inns, and the more businesses that were founded, the more families settled in and formed the Bluffton parish. In 1861 Bluffton was incorporated as a Village . Bluffton was named after the Mennonite community of Bluffton in Indiana .

Bluffton University

Bluffton University was founded in 1899 as the Central Mennonite College in Bluffton. As the number of Mennonite students decreased, the college was renamed Bluffton University. In 1997 only 13 percent of the students were Mennonites.

Despite the minor role the Mennonites play in the university, it remains attached to their religious values. There is a strict code of honor and students are allowed to take their written exams alone, without a supervisor. Also in the cafeteria on campus , ID cards and meal cards are not asked, but guests are expected to pay for their menu themselves.

In the 20th century the university always had a student body of a few hundred, but in the 1990s the number exceeded 1,000. In 2005 there were 1,211 including 239 graduate students. Phyllis Diller and Hugh Downs are among the university's noted alumni.
