history

Historians assume that Boxdorf was founded in the middle of the 12th century when the settlement of the Elbe valley as far as the Moritzburg plateau began. The first settlers settled around today's village square. Later the place developed into a street green village . The village pond used to be where the village oak planted in 1898 stands today.

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1242 under the name Bokoisdorph in a Latin document. The document from Bishop Conrad von Meißen describes the route from Boxdorf to Dresden. Bokoisdorph is a mixed name made up of the Old Sorbian personal name Pokoj (room) and the German word -dorf. Chroniclers suspect that the man held a special position in the place named after him, for example that of the village mayor .

The name of the place changed several times over the course of the century: If you spoke of Bokendorf in 1279 and Pockersdorff in 1411, the pronunciation in the late 15th century was already similar to today's. The community seal from 1748 shows a billy goat, based on the older spelling Bocksdorff. The spelling has remained the same since the middle of the 19th century.

The main occupation on the 258 hectare Gewannflur was agriculture until the end of the 19th century. A special feature of this was the cultivation of the nutrient-poor soils, which the farmers compensated by growing buckwheat. Rye and oats were also grown. In 1772 potato cultivation found its way into the region. The street name "An der Triebe" refers to the cattle drive of those days. The register of places proves the existence of a horse mill. Winzer operated viticulture near the tree lawn. In 1953 three farms merged to form the LPG "unit". Seven years later the LPG "Haideberg" was founded. State-organized agriculture was dissolved after reunification at the end of 1991.

During the Seven Years' War , Prussians and Austrians took turns taking possession of Boxdorf. The fighting destroyed many fields. The Napoleonic Wars did not pass without a trace either: in 1813 the French fought against Russian infantry and Cossacks. The skeleton of a Russian soldier was unearthed on Schulstrasse in 1928, and twelve more skulls and bones on the tree meadow in 1936. In 1828 the biggest fire in the history of the village raged and destroyed many buildings. In 1913 the first Dresden airfield was opened on the meadow between the windmill and the Wetterberg. With the outbreak of the First World War, operations had to be stopped. The world war claimed 13 victims from Boxdorf. During the Second World War, Anglo-American squadrons destroyed the “Lindenhof” sanatorium on the baumiese; ten patients and four employees died. 98 citizens of Boxdorf died in the war. The Red Army marched in on May 7, 1945.

The village had been in the possession of the canon of Meissen since the 13th century. From the middle of the 16th century it was under the authority of Dresden . In the meantime Boxdorf also belonged to Moritzburg. Boxdorf has been part of the Dresden-Land district since 1952 (renamed "Landkreis Dresden" in 1990), which was dissolved in 1996 as part of a district reform. Since then the place has been part of the district of Meißen. On January 1, 1994 Boxdorf merged with Friedewald and Reichenberg to form the municipality of Reichenberg. At the beginning of 1999 it was incorporated into Moritzburg.

  • Boxdorfer Windmühle : The mill located on the 240 meter high Galgenberg was originally built in 1839 as a post mill . After being destroyed in a fire in 1849, it was rebuilt as a stone Dutch windmill and remained in operation until 1887. Three years later, the owners received a concession to serve beer and coffee.
