history

Hauswalde was first mentioned in a document in 1346. In 1349 Bretnig was first referred to as Breiteneichech (= broad oak forest) in a loan book of Friedrich des Strengen . In a loan document from 1455, a Vorwerk in Bretnig was assigned to the Pulsnitz manor . In the 16th century, Bretnig was already an independent manor. The settlement originally corresponded to that of a forest hoof village .

Hauswalde and Bretnig belong historically to Upper Lusatia .

In 1761 Bretnig received its own schoolhouse in the center of the village, in 1852 the lower school and in 1863 the upper school were added after two years of construction. In 1836 the canvas factory JG Petzold & Sohn (Kohlen-Petzold) was founded. The dye works, a lack of steam and the coal shop were added later. From 1891 the “Allgemeine Anzeiger” appeared, a local paper for Bretnig, Großröhrsdorf, Hauswalde and the surrounding area (printing and publishing house A. Schurig). Since January 25, 1900, the community has been connected to the Großröhrsdorfer electricity company. On October 4, 1903, the Bretniger church, which was built according to plans by the architects Gebrüder Völkel (Großröhrsdorf) and under the direction of the master builder Nitzsche (Großröhrsdorf), was consecrated. On September 23, 1913 the motor vehicle line between Radeberg and Bischofswerda was opened. Due to the First World War , the trips had to be interrupted from 1915 to 1920. From 1920 to May 8, 1945 Max Übel held the office of the first full-time mayor.

In May 1945 49 people fell victim to the fighting between German and Polish troops. 89 buildings in the village were completely destroyed. The localities of Klinkenplatz, Niederdorf, Röderweg and Karolinenhöhe were particularly affected. On July 1, 1950, the previous communities of Bretnig and Hauswalde were merged to form the new community of Bretnig-Hauswalde.

In 1960 the ten-class polytechnic high school was introduced. From 1980 the lessons took place in a new school. In 1990, the municipal council decided on the new place name Bretnig-Hauswalde. On January 1, 2017, Bretnig-Hauswalde was incorporated into the neighboring town of Großröhrsdorf due to its difficult budget situation.
