Brian Clarke (born July 2, 1953 in Oldham , Lancashire , England ) is a British architectural artist, painter and printmaker, known for his large-format stained glass and mosaic projects, abstract and symbolist canvases and his collaboration with prominent figures in modern and contemporary architecture.

Life

Brian Clarke was born in Oldham, Lancashire, to Edward Ord Clarke, a miner, and Lilian Clarke (née Whitehead), a cotton spinner. In 1965, Clarke attended the Oldham School of Arts and Crafts after receiving a youth scholarship. In 1968 he went to the Burnley School of Arts before going to the North Devon College of Art and Design (Bideford Art School) in 1970 . At this college he received an Art and Design Diploma with Honors . A travel grant from the British Winston Churchill Memorial Trust enabled him to study in Rome , France and Germany in the first phase , here with Johannes Schreiter . The second part of the scholarship enabled him to stay in Los Angeles and New York City . Today Clarke is one of the Foundation's trustees.

Clarke is currently Visiting Professor of Architecture at University College London . In Germany he works in Munich with the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt company.
