history

Håkan Nesser (2012)

The publishing house Bertelsmann founded the btb publishing house in 1996 as a supplement to the publishing house Goldmann Verlag in order to be active in the segment of sophisticated literature on the paperback market. With Klaus Eck as publishing director (until 2014) and Georg Reuchlein as program director (until 2018), people from Goldmann Verlag also took on responsibility. The founding of the publishing house was accompanied by a major marketing campaign by Volker Neumann , Bertelsmann’s Marketing Manager at the time. Booksellers, for example, received gift folders with reading copies as well as advertising material with the publisher's logo - a St. Mark's lion . The sales of 10 million Marks planned with this concept after the first year could be more than fulfilled. Even after switching to Claudia Reitter's marketing position at Bertelsmann in 2002, there were various marketing activities such as advertisements in the print and online areas, bus advertising, travel raffles (in cooperation with TUI ) and other reader campaigns. Initially, btb published 9 paperback titles a month, currently it is around 140 per year. Since 1997, the paperback program has been supplemented with a hardcover program of around 15 book titles per year.

program

With the aim of publishing sophisticated non-fiction and fiction in paperback format for a wide audience, the publisher started with publications by well-known authors such as Stefan Heym , Doris Lessing , Margaret Atwood , Walter Kempowski , Luciano De Crescenzo , Michail Gorbatschow and Frank McCourt . In doing so, licenses from other Bertelsmann group publishers were often used, such as C. Bertelsmann Verlag , Knaus or Siedler . Authors such as Hanns-Josef Ortheil , Haruki Murakami , Irvin D. Yalom and Juli Zeh were added later, although Zeh's works were already published in paperback by btb before the author switched to Random House publishing group in 2014. Quite soon, demanding detective novels such as those by Ulrich Ritzel or Robert Hältner were included in the publishing program . Scandinavian literature was also a focus of the publishing house shortly after it was founded, with works by Helene Tursten , Mikael Niemi , Åsa Larsson and Håkan Nesser , among others . The latter is considered the publisher's most successful author and was able to place himself in the top 10 bestseller lists with hardcover and paperback editions. Btb achieved its first No. 1 bestseller in paperback in 2006 with Pascal Mercier'sNight Train to Lisbon ”, which was repeated in 2013 with “ The centenarian who climbed out of the window and disappeared ” by Jonas Jonasson . In the hardcover area, Maja Lunde'sThe History of Bees ” became the first No. 1 title on the bestseller list in 2017.
