Bucherer Group is a group of the watch and jewelery industry based in Lucerne . The group is in the third generation of family ownership and, according to its own statements, employs 1500 people, according to other sources 1200 employees.

The group operates 33 watch and jewelry stores under its own name in Switzerland , Germany , London , Vienna , Paris and Copenhagen . Bucherer Montres SA, which belongs to the group, produces its own watches under the brand name Carl F. Bucherer .

history

In 1888, Carl F. Bucherer and his wife Luise opened a toy and hardware store in Lucerne and in the following years switched to the jewelry and watch trade. In the early 1920s, Carl F. Bucherer's sons, the watchmaker Ernst and the goldsmith Carl Eduard Bucherer joined the family business . C. Bucherer was founded in 1919 and offered a collection of wristwatches for women with their own dial imprint. Ernst Bucherer entered into a partnership with Hans Wilsdorf , the founder of Rolex , and in 1924 added the then barely established watch brand to its range. Today, Rolex is still Bucherer's most important partner.

The economic crises of the 1930s and the Second World War slowed down the company's success. The company's founder, Carl F. Bucherer, died in 1933 and the company was subsequently converted into a stock corporation.

In the post-war period, well-known watch models with their own dial print, such as the chronograph with a large date and various chronometers , were offered under the Bucherer brand . From 1962 the company and ten other companies participated in the development of the Beta-21 quartz watch . In 1967 the Ébauchen manufacturer Montres Credos SA was acquired. With their chronometer movements , Bucherer became the third largest manufacturer of mechanical chronometers in the 1970s, but stopped production due to the quartz crisis . In 2001, the headquarters of Montres Credos SA was relocated to Lucerne and renamed Montres Bucherer SA , which began to manufacture its own watches under the Carl F. Bucherer brand in cooperation with the watch manufacturer Techniques Horlogères Appliquées SA . In 2002 the headquarters of Montres Bucherer SA were relocated to Lengnau . In 2007 Techniques Horlogères Appliquées SA was bought by the Bucherer Group and renamed Carl F. Bucherer Technologies AG in order to set up its own watch manufacture .

In 1977 the third generation of the Bucherer entrepreneurial family joined the company. Under Jörg G. Bucherer, Bucherer expanded to Austria in the 1980s and to Germany around ten years later . In 1989, Bucherer took over the Kurz Group, which is mainly represented in Swiss city centers and shopping centers, and in 2001 took over the tourist -oriented Swiss Lion AG.

In 2013, Bucherer opened the world's largest watch and jewelry store in the center of Paris, with a sales area of 2,200 m². In autumn 2016, Bucherer opened its first shop-in-shop at Jelmoli in Zurich . In 2017, three more luxury boutiques will follow in cooperation with The KaDeWe Group in Alsterhaus (Hamburg), Oberpollinger (Munich) and KaDeWe (Berlin).

On January 31, 2018, the Bucherer Group announced that it would take over Tourneau LLC , the largest luxury watch retailer in the USA .

In May 2020, Bucherer announced that it would sell the Kurz jeweler, consisting of eight locations with around 130 employees, to Schwyzer IGS, the parent company behind the Carat jewelry group, by the end of September 2020.

Due to the weak demand as a result of the corona crisis, the family company announced in August 2020 that it would have to cut 370 jobs worldwide.
