history

The development of organized allotment gardening began in the middle of the 19th century. The first union, the Reichsverband, was founded on August 21, 1921.

In § 1 of the statutes, the founders wrote: "The Reich Association of Allotment Garden Associations in Germany aims to unite all owners of allotment gardens while keeping away from party-political and denominational endeavors" . The association has pursued this goal to the present day, even if the name and legal form have changed several times in the course of its existence. In 1938, the Reichsbund der allotment gardeners and small settlers of Germany , which had one million members, earned . V. on a total area of 45,000 hectares, 350 million kg of fruit and 300 million kg of vegetables.

As a result of the division of Germany, two independent associations existed for over four decades. In the GDR, allotment gardeners were organized in the Association of Allotment Gardeners, Settlers and Small Animal Breeders (VKSK). Since the reunification, the German allotment gardeners have been united under the roof of the BDG.
