The castle ruins Hessenwalt or Hessenwald are the rest of a hilltop castle at 530 m above sea level. NN high Heiligenberg or Schlossberg about 600 m south of the Roth district of the municipality of Eschenburg in the Lahn-Dill district in Hesse .
history
The castle was built by the Landgraves of Hesse around 1325 to 1326 to defend the Breidenbacher Grund during the Dernbach feud . Although the construction costs of 1,200,000 “Schild Tournosen” shields are documented and the castle must have been a stately complex, the castle did not withstand the Nassau army. Destroyed by the Counts of Nassau from 1327 to 1328 , the castle fell into disrepair until the 15th century. As early as 1563 it is only noted that " an old castle was supposed to have been here" before .
Only small remains of the wall (remains of the foundation wall, a gate pillar, remains of the stairs), the remains of a rock cellar and the deep ditch are preserved from the former castle complex with a bailey .
