Graupen Castle

The Burg barley ( Czech Hrad Krupka ) is the partially very well preserved residue of a formerly handsome Burg. It is located in the middle of the Czech town of Krupka (Graupen) on a ledge and can also be reached by motor vehicle via a narrow path. Because of the roses that once bloomed on the slopes of the castle or in the castle garden, it was also called the Rosenburg .

The formerly strategically important fortification was probably built around 1300 to protect the tin mines of Krupka, the city itself and the old trade route to Saxony . The first documentary mention as an already existing castle comes from a feudal deed from 1330. In the Hussite Wars , the complex was destroyed in 1429 and then rebuilt between 1434 and 1440. A late Gothic renovation took place in 1471–82 . In the 15th and 16th centuries, u. a. Members of the Saxon noble family von Colditz , the Bohemian family von Kolowrat and Emperor Rudolf II as the owners. In 1557 Thimo V. von Colditz sold the Graupen estate with the castle to Kaspar von Schönburg . During the Thirty Years War the facility was destroyed again. The Bergamtshaus was built on the courtyard between 1695–97. In 1710, Count Franz Clary-Aldringen acquired the castle and rebuilt parts of it. Large parts of the complex were abandoned and fell into disrepair.

Today the castle is a popular destination. Between 1999 and 2003 a thorough renovation took place. The Bergamtshaus is used today as a hotel and restaurant. On the south side of the castle grounds there is a viewing platform with a view of Krupka and its historic churches. There is also a memorial on this viewing platform, which commemorates Goethe's visit to Graupen. The castle is a route point on the cross- border mining nature trail around Krupka.
