The Burgau is a combined nature and landscape protection area in Karlsruhe , Baden-Württemberg , Germany. The reserve was established in 1989 and surrounds the older nature reserve Altrhein Maxau . It is located in the Rhine floodplains between the Rhine in the west, the Rhine harbor in the south and the Alb and the southern bypass in the east and north. Burgau serves to preserve and maintain a landscape of the young and old floodplains shaped by the Rhine with a variety of different natural and near-natural biotope types such as wet biotopes with open water areas, floating leaf areas, reed areas and shallow water areas, steep banks, reeds, pools, ditches, wet meadows, meadow communities, Orchards , arable fringes, bushes, hedges, forest biotopes, dry and ruderal locations as well as raw soil biotopes . The Burgau protected area includes the southern part of Karlsruhe's largest quarry pond, Knielinger See and the Knielingen racecourse . It consists of 291 hectares of nature reserve and 114 hectares of landscape protection area.
